How to Get Rust Off Cast Iron Skillet
Does cast iron rust? Yes. One of our biggest issues with cast iron cookware is rust buildup. The question then turns into, how to get rust off cast iron cookware?

We are often asked whether vinegar will remove rust off a cast iron skillet. For most people the answer would be no. You can not just put some lemon juice on it and hope for the best. If you use vinegar on a rusty skillet, you could possibly ruin the whole thing.

So what can you do instead? Many have turned to commercial rust removers like bacon grease and table salt to get the problem under control. These are fine alternatives but they should never be used on cast iron items. They will not work.

What you can do instead is try using a product made specifically to remove rust. Products like Rust Off can help to quickly and easily take off the stains left behind by rust and bring back the luster to its former appearance. You simply apply the rust remover to the skillet before it begins to flake away and you can have it looking as good as new in no time at all. It is recommended that you do not use salt when attempting to remove rust from any type of metal including your cast iron skillet.

If salt does not work or you would prefer not to use vinegar, there is another way to remove rust that is even easier and safer than using commercial products. Home remedies have been used for years to take off the stains left behind by rust and they work just as well. A mixture of warm water and white vinegar works great to quickly and safely remove rust stains from anything that has even the smallest amount of rust. Once you have used this remedy on your cast iron skillet, you will wonder how you lived without it before.

Of course, if baking does not affect your rust removal efforts, you can also use lemon juice to try to clean your skillet. Simply wet the affected area with lemon juice and then scrub the area with a soft rag or sponge. If the affected area is really dirty, you can also use ammonia or club soda to remove the rust stains from your skillet. However, it is not recommended that you use these household chemicals on cast iron or steel items because they can react with the metal and decrease the protective coating.
