A Short Review of Neo-Gothic Architecture
Neo-Gothic architecture was an architectural style movement that was born in the late 17 hundreds. The French Revolution saw the rise of this style as more educated and dedicated admirers of the old Gothic styles sought to restore the classic Gothic architecture and to counter the highly fashionable neoclassical styles of the time. The architectural style was greatly influenced by the French Revolution and all its implications. Gothic architecture is focused on images of the antiquated Greek and Roman civilisations, especially on classical ruins. This style was distinguished by steeply pitched roofs that were made of stone and often constructed of clay. Certain buildings of the time even featured figures from Greek mythology, like the owl or the lion.


Gothic architecture was characterized by the use of sharp angles and heavy, dark woodwork. The typical Gothic home or building, therefore, would be an enormous castle, town hall cathedral or church. Most often, a Gothic sanctuary would be adorned with rows of stone that are richly colored and furniture. The majority of these buildings were built outdoors in fields, forests or swamps - in order to reflect the natural aesthetic of the landscape. In the Gothic tradition the natural landscape was often associated with the underworld.

In the latter half of the 20th century, as the art and design movement gained recognition with the British people, a lot of Gothic buildings began to be replicated in white or grey plastic to create modern day neo-classical architecture. In the 20th century, Neo-Gothic architecture gave rise to what is now known as "cave architecture". Many contemporary neoclassical or Romanesque buildings can be found in city centres and commercial buildings across the globe. Some of the most famous examples include: The Metropole, Granada's famed leaning tower, The Globe Theatre and The National Gallery in London.

During the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, neo-classical and Romanesque architectural styles came into popular use. The industrial revolution brought new materials and technologies to the architecture industry. Steel was the first material used for building industrial structures in the late 19th century. Additionally new methods of mass production were developed. As industrialization spread around the globe, the concept of neogothic architecture spread across the globe and eventually evolved into what we call classical architecture.

There are many similarities between Neo-classical architecture and classical architecture. The most significant is the use of arches. They both involve an underlying geometric pattern and are striving for a symmetrical design, whereas the latter used repetition of geometric patterns to create a highly aesthetically appealing final design. In actuality, a lot of modern architects and artists have created many outstanding neo-Gothic artifacts. The arched roofs of Neo-Gothic architecture are an excellent representation of this style. Roman Catholic churches are common to have arches since they symbolize the vaulted ceilings that were once found in these churches.

A few of the most famous examples of this architecture are found in cathedrals such as the Wren church in Reading, and the Basilica of St. Barnabas in York. Other notable examples include the Alter Piece of the Communion Cathedral in Wurtenberg, The Tower of London, The State Museum of Art in Berlin and the Singing Ringing Tree in Lisbon. Many examples of tiled roofs are used in Neogothic architecture to enhance the archways. Neo-Gothic architecture is known for its use of detail. Many cathedrals and structures feature intricate detailing on their facades. This characteristic can be seen in the examples of the Alter part of the Communion Cathedral in Reading as well as the magnificent Cathedrals of Norwich and York. The Gothic revival architecture of the Edwardian period was heavily based upon the intricate details and the nautical nature of the sky and sea.

It is crucial to examine the numerous types of neo-Gothic architectural designs to fully comprehend it. The primary architectural characteristic is the use of heavy, dark woods. It also features large central open spaces with simple geometric patterns.
