A Short Review of Neo-Gothic Architecture
Neo-Gothic architecture was an architectural design movement which began in the late seventeen hundreds. The movement grew and developed during the period of the French Revolution, as more learned and serious admirers of the ancient Gothic styles sought to restore classic Gothic architecture, against the fashionable neo-classical styles popular during the time. The architectural style was highly inspired by the French Revolution and all its implications. Gothic architecture focused its attention on the imagery of ancient Greek and Roman civilisations, and more specifically, on the ruins of classical times. This style was distinguished by steeply pitched roofs that were made of stone and usually constructed from clay. Certain buildings from this time even featured figures from Greek mythology, such as the owl and the lion.

Gothic architecture was distinguished by its use of dark, heavy woodwork as well as sharp angles. The typical Gothic dwelling or building, therefore, would be a massive castle or town hall cathedral, or church. A Gothic sanctuary will often have rows of vibrantly colored stone and furniture. To evoke the natural beauty of the landscape, such structures were usually constructed outdoors in fields, forests, or swamps. In the Gothic tradition the natural landscape was equated with the underworld.

As the movement of art and design gained popularity in the United Kingdom, many Gothic buildings were reconstructed in white plaster and grey plastic during the latter half of the 20th century. This was the beginning of the modern neo-classical style. Neo-Gothic architecture was replaced by what is often referred to as "cave architecture" in the 20th century. Neo-classical and Romanesque structures can be found in many cities and commercial buildings across the globe. The Metropole the Granada's famed leaning tower; The Globe Theatre in London; and The National Gallery of London are just a few examples.

During the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, neo-classical and Romanesque architectural styles were brought into common use. The Industrial Revolution introduced revolutionary technologies and materials that revolutionized the architecture industry. In the latter half of the 19th century, the use of steel began to be used to construct the typical industrial structures and also in new methods of mass production. As industrialization spread across the world, the concept of neo-gothic architecture grew across different countries as well before evolving into what we recognize today as classical architecture.

There are many similarities between classical and Neo-classical architecture. The most significant is the use arches. They both involve an underlying geometric pattern and are seeking a symmetrical overall design, while the latter used repeated geometric patterns to create an attractive and appealing final design. Many modern architects and artists have created stunning Neo-Gothic artifacts. The arched roofs of Neo-Gothic architecture are a great illustration of this style. Roman Catholic churches are common to have arches since they symbolize the vaulted ceilings that were once found in these churches.

Cathedrals such as the Wren church, Reading, or the Basilica of St. Barnabas, York are some of the most well-known examples of this architecture. Other notable examples include the Alter Piece of the Communion Cathedral in Wurtenberg, The Tower of London, The State Museum of Art in Berlin and the Singing Ringing Tree in Lisbon. Many examples of tiled roofs are utilized in Neogothic architecture to enhance the archways. The Alter Piece of the Communion Cathedral, Reading, and the tower of the State Museum of Art, Berlin are two of the most striking examples.


Neo-Gothic architecture is renowned for its use of detail. A lot of the structures and cathedrals have intricate detailing within their facades. This feature can be seen in the examples of the Alter piece of the Communion Cathedral in Reading as well as the grand Cathedrals of Norwich and York. The Gothic revival architecture of the Edwardian period was heavily influenced by the intricate details and the nautical nature of the sea and sky.

In order to understand neo-Gothic architecture in its fullest shape, it is necessary to examine the various forms that it takes. The primary architectural element is dark, heavy woods. It is also typical of large central open spaces, which feature simple geometric patterns. Examples of Neo-Gothic architecture include those at Princeton University and the magnificent cathedrals in Oxford and Cambridge.
