Warehouse Maintenance Is Key to Handling Retail Chargebacks
Distribution warehouses and retailer warehouses are two types of places where we find ourselves when shopping. In both cases we have the need to purchase a broad selection of products. When purchasing, we want to know that the items we purchase will arrive safely at our location and that the cost of delivery is fair and reasonable. This ability to purchase goods in a timely fashion is what gives the difference between a good distributor and one that delivers sub par merchandise.

A wholesaler warehouse and retailer sometimes become One-stop-shops. The "one stop-shop" phenomenon describes a situation in which one business sells its products to other businesses as well as to consumers. An example of this would be a manufacturer that produces consumer electronics such as televisions, computers, DVD players, compact discs, and so on. The manufacturer could offer distributors the products to sell while taking a small portion of the profits from the sale in order to cover the expenses of having a warehouse and an in-store staff.

Another way to look at it from the view of a distributor is as if they were a retailer. This brings up questions about the status of the merchandise in the warehouse and the relationship between the wholesaler and the retailer. Often, in a loadproof warehouse the retailer is responsible for maintaining the quality of the goods that enter into their store. If a distributor warehouse does not keep merchandise in good condition, a retailer may be liable for damage claims. It may also be an issue if the wholesaler allows goods to enter into the store with defects that result in damage claims. As a warehousing company, the wholesaler should be able to verify whether or not a distributor warehouse is properly in condition before allowing any goods to enter the store.

Distribution warehouses that are in poor condition are a losing business. They lose money each day because customers are turned away and merchandise does not make it into the store. If a warehouse is found to have many loadproof walls or poor conditions with products stacked in wrong locations, then the retailer is responsible for paying for the damages and lost sales.

An often overlooked aspect of a distribution warehouse job right from the start is the issue of fire hazards. Many of the warehouses that have poor conditions also have high levels of security risks, which is another reason they are losing money day after day. Distributors who are in charge of fire hazards need to not only be concerned about having employees who know how to deactivate fire alarms, but also need to keep the right security measures in place for the staff. Having a staff that knows how to work around fire hazards can make all the difference in keeping retail chargebacks off and turning over more profits in the long run.

The manufacturer needs to get on a quick call to see if there are any areas of concern, and also needs to set up an inspection team to come look at the warehouse's conditions and take action as soon as possible. If a retailer does not call the manufacturer ahead of time and gets a loadproof building, warehouse, and security system in place before the release of the product, then it may end up being too late, and an employee has to get hurt while trying to get the product out on time. By taking the proper steps early, it is possible to have a good warehouse, loadproof buildings, and a reliable security system ready in time for the release of your product.
