The Unusual Things Some Bosses Expect Their PAs to Do
A top PA can get to earn a high salary for their services, but there seems to be no limit towards the tasks their bosses expect them to undertake, a number of them well beyond your usual workload to be expected in a corporate environment.
Of view it , you know that a top executive is likely to be extremely busy, perhaps stressed and positively under pressure, especially during the economic uncertainty which includes characterised recent years since the start of the global recession in 2008.
So so that you can lift earlier New Year's (2011) doom and gloom the following stories gleaned from anecdotes from PAs, who must remain anonymous, listed here is a collection of tasks they have been motivated to carry out for bosses, which the writer hopes will raise a chuckle or two.
It's almost become a part of the task profile for any PA to get able to write emails with respect to their boss, correcting spelling and grammar on the way, but it seems lots of people are still challenged by technology and regularly throw their expensive executive mobile phones with the hapless PA largely because they haven't a hint the way you use it!
This should also apply to photocopiers, ac and TV remotes, heating controls as well as other devices!
The PA is often also needed to exercise extreme tact as well as an ability being shock proof. Bosses happen to be reported to share the intimate information their activities with all the latest "girlfriend" and asked their PAs to book suitable and discreet rooms for the night, tables in lap dancing clubs and other such venues and taxis for that morning after.
Walking the dog? Midnight calls when the boss household has run out of make-up? Organising mothering sunday party for the kids? They're all pretty routine.
Equally routine is monitoring her or his family commitments, wedding anniversaries, birthdays, dental, hair, gym, optician and also other appointments for your whole family, organising the hire of an horse for that wife to possess a gentle canter on a Saturday, buying and wrapping Christmas or birthday gifts to the wife - and quite often the girlfriend - but never, ever letting on to the wife that the girlfriend exists!
One harassed PA has told of the memorable occasion when she found herself being forced to tactfully stonewall her boss's wife, who had arrived unexpectedly at the office, with the excuse which he was out at meetings rather than to get contacted, while on a regular basis if you know boss and girlfriend were at the time indulging in getting "better acquainted" inside a nearby unused office!
It just isn't unusual to receive a trip from an irate boss stuck at the fog-bound airport where all flights have been grounded and requiring the PA to "fix it", it seems, nor are out of hours calls on weekends as well as on Christmas Day.
A a higher level clairvoyance is definitely an asset in relation to producing tea and other refreshments made exactly to taste and on the time required set up boss have not said a thing, not to mention doing exercises what action he desires to take when he doesn't know himself.
All with this could possibly be amusing and light-hearted however, there is a life threatening point here. Too often top PAs feel obliged to express "yes" to your demand using their boss, however, unreasonable, say employment experts.
However, they advise that bosses might have their idiosyncrasies and that staff don't leave bad organisations, they leave bad bosses but strategies of avoiding being forced to take such drastic action.
They suggest that a PA establishes a great working relationship from the start by being pro-active, making suggestions and with their boss to develop idea of the latter's habits and type of working. It is important and to establish boundaries, so that when the boss requests housekeeping or dog walking, the PA can refuse politely but firmly sufficient reason for a good chance of obtaining the refusal accepted.
