Trees and shrubs are a wonderful addition to any landscape, instantly transforming dull patches of land into desirable green spaces. Besides Get More Information impart, planting trees and shrubs can be a wise environmental and economical move. Both purify oxygen, guard against soil erosion and, similar to forms of landscaping, increase property value. Certainly, both trees and shrubs are desirable landscaping elements. But what exactly is the various involving the two, and what exactly are their unique landscaping advantages and disadvantages?
From a botanical viewpoint, the gap between bushes primarily boils down to size and stem structure. According to the National Audubon Society's Field Guide to Trees, a tree means a woody plant with one primary stem, i.e. the back. The trunk's circumference is anticipated to become at least three inches in diameter. The tree itself should also be capable of grow at the very least 13 feet in height and create a nicely defined system of branches and leaves. A shrub, however, is of short stature and supported by several stems that branch out of its base. It is technically possible for a variety of plant to get both a tree plus a shrub simultaneously, with all the species developing as being a tree in favorable climates and remaining a stunted shrub in hostile ones. Even so, whether every individual plant is to get considered a tree or a shrub can be based on the above measurements.
From a landscaper's perspective, the main difference between trees and shrubs is more nuanced. Shrubs are usually hardier than trees, capable to survive in rugged climates throughout the world. This ensures they are ideal for landscaping in places with extreme temperatures, or where clients desire to spend minimal time and effort on maintenance. However, their association with hardiness also gives shrubs an air of toughness which makes them less sought after in residential design. Trees, however, have for ages been symbols of longevity and prosperity. When planted properly, they offer an air of permanence and serenity that is challenging to substitute. They are therefore highly popular by home owners, and also commercial businesses seeking a 'homey' feel.
But despite their attractiveness, trees will have several drawbacks. For one, trees could be notoriously slow growers. It can take decades for them to reach a considerable height, flower, or bear fruit. Their added stature also brings about excellent targets for high winds, lightening, as well as other environmental hazards. Lastly, trees need regular maintenance which include annual spraying and pruning. Shrubs however grow quickly, and require nothing more than a periodic, easy-to-reach trim. At the end of the day, many landscapers decide to mix and match shrubs and trees in their designs. Thus they get the best of both worlds: fast-growing, low-maintenance shrubs that become immediate landscape accents, and attention-getting, work-intensive trees that make strong long-term features.
