For me, the quickest and easiest substitute for balsamic vinegar in a recipe is white grape juice. I've also been known to substitute vanilla extract for some recipes. That's because vanilla extract has a very similar consistency to vinegar (though not quite as runny). That's another thing that makes it an excellent replacement.
Other substitutions for this classic Italian vinegar are: honey, molasses or even apple juice. In my opinion, there's really no need to go through all the trouble of finding alternative substitutes for balsam vinegar when you can just buy it in a store. You're already familiar with its flavor, so it should be no trouble at all to integrate it into your favorite recipes. You'll get the same great taste without all the trouble.
First of all, you can use it as a vinaigrette by creating a cheesecloth using one inch of cheesecloth placed over a glass jar and leaving a wad of bread cubes inside. Put the jar in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Once the vinegar mixture begins to simmer, turn off the heat and let the mixture cool down to about 150 degrees F on a wire cooling rack. Leave the mixture to cool down completely. The end result will be a thick, syrupy sauce that you can use in a variety of recipes.
Another great idea for balsam vinegar substitutes is to use it as an alternative to traditional tomato sauce. Just substitute for the tomatoes and you've got instant hotmail sauce! If you prefer a thicker consistency, add a bit of extra virgin olive oil or grapeseed oil to the mixture. Both have their own distinctive flavors, though.
There are other items you might want to use balsam vinegar substitutes for in your cooking as well. For instance, instead of using a can of tuna packed in water, try a jar of tomato paste. It might be interesting to add some ingredients from your refrigerator to make the recipe even tastier: salt, sugar, soy sauce, or mayonnaise.
Another idea is to use balsam vinegar in your bread recipes. You can make a great sandwich using sourdough bread, canned or fresh tomatoes, and your favorite red wine (ask your local deli for recommendation). Just mix the contents of your can of tuna along with your bread mix and pure grape juice to make a very tasty sauce. You can also pour this over cooked pasta or tossed salad for a zesty, Mediterranean flavor boost.
