Postmodern Architecture
Postmodern architecture, often referred to as Postmodernism, refers to a modern style of architecture that encourages individualism and experimentation. It was created as a reaction against classic conventional styles and sought to design buildings that are exciting and lively but still defying established rules. There are no guidelines for the design of this type of architecture, because every challenge is an opportunity to experiment with construction materials, form, and function. Postmodern architects are known to abandon strict geometric designs and favor an organic, multi-faceted approach.

The mark of the most successful postmodern buildings is its ability to deviate from convention. The style tries to exaggerate or at least support the idea of the separation between modern and classic elements. This is evident in the selection of materials, such as, in the choice of colored glass or pointed trim. Lofts tend to use stainless steel appliances, black or grey tiles, and classic buildings will utilize black or white plastic furniture. In Tokyo's Ikebukuro, you will find rows and rows of round glasses and cups made of metal that are perfectly suited to the area's architecture. In fact, the curving roofs of some modern buildings are designed to look like geodes.

With regards to interior design, the main principle of postmodernism is simplicity. Simple lines are predominant and colors that are contrasting are used in a minimal manner, if at all. The most common interior design concept in the current wave of buildings is the use of plain vertical or horizontal surfaces, such as concrete and wood that have no texture. This can create a gap in the center of the room, since all the concerns of the interior design are directed to the outside. This interior trick is also well-known.

Postmodern architecture has a hard time appealing to its audience, for several reasons. One reason is that people who embrace the new trends tend to be young and have a an intense feeling of their own self-interest. The new designers are less loyal to established avant-garde and modernist artistic movements than the older generation which is why they tend to depart from the conventional. In addition the majority of these new stylists don't like the extravagant display of formlessness, which are typical in the more radical modernist schools of thought.

One of the characteristics of postmodern architecture is the juxtaposition between the interior and exterior design. This is caused by the layout of the building or stark contrasts between its structure and form. For instance one of the more frequent interior features of the building would be the existence of a building which is almost block-like in form. However the exterior of a building would usually be an open window, with lots of natural light streaming through.

The rejection of modernist and postmodernist architectural styles is evident most obviously in the use of rounded forms and shapes in architecture. Although such architecture was most popular in the early stages of the movement, it was criticized most strongly towards the end of its life. Instead, buildings were constructed primarily with geometric forms and abstract forms. In actuality the most popular geometric shapes found in modernist architectures are rectangles, squares, and ovals. Many buildings employed the same form for all aspects of their design.

Another feature of postmodern architecture is the total absence of bright colors. Modernists have accused architects of neglecting the significance of basic colours in designing modern structures. The architecture of the day was not an array of vibrant colors. Most modern buildings even employed grey or dark as the primary colours for their exterior and interior environments, which contrast starkly with the vibrant colour schemes found in the top modern buildings.

One of the main characteristics of postmodern architecture is the complete absence of any internal lighting. This is in stark contrast to the more common types of architecture that relied on cleverly placed lights to provide illumination to the interior. In reality, a lot of modern buildings actually have no lighting inside because they are based on flat lighting emitted through vents in the roof of the structure. However, many modern buildings do make use of clever designs in the construction of their roofs in order to let light flow through the building, however these are not unique. ต้นศิลป์
