“...be offered in the sale to the person of quality and fortune through the kingdom” “....buying the children alive, and dressing them hot from the knives, as we do roasting pigs.” “....as they have already devoured most of the parents, seem to have the best title to the children.” It makes the essay sound serious, but also satirical. These examples show how kids are eating in a way as also are animals that we daily eat.
Find at least two examples of understatement in the essay. (This is when the speaker makes a serious problem seem inconsequential). What effect does this technique have on the essay? What purpose do these examples serve?
‘‘...as a little bordering upon cruelty;...’’ shows that they find this as uncruel and ok.
“ A child will make two dishes at an entertainment for friends…..” Shows that they find cannibalism as not a big deal.
Find at least two examples of overstatement in the essay. What effect does this technique have on the essay? What purpose do these examples serve? (Overstatement though similar to hyperbole, overstatement is when the speaker makes a minor problem seem critical).
“...being the principal breeders of the nation as well as our most dangerous enemies.” “...whole will make a considerable figure at a lord mayor’s feast or any public entertainment” This is showing how many of these little problems that he is saying could actually lead people to believe these are a major problem.
Find at least two examples of hyperbole in the essay. What effect does this technique have on the essay? What purpose do these examples serve?
“ ...may flay the the carcass; the skin witch “... I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout.” This creates an over exaggeration that can’t be ignored.
Look for examples of logos, pathos, and ethos. Does the speaker rely on one more than the others? What is the effect of the speaker creating these aspects of argument? Why?
How do satire and irony help Swift accomplish what a more conventional approach to persuasion would not?
