Especially for older cars or antique vehicles being restored, used car parts may very well be the only answer to your parts needs. You may not find any auto supply outlet with access to car parts for a '49 Studebaker pickup or a '32 Ford, but you may very well find salvage yards with cars that are being sold for parts.

While a new car means new car parts and auto parts; there is almost nothing a little auto job can not fix. Cars are meant to take quite some heat from their owners. They are strongly built machines that can endure more than we think. They usually have a pretty long life span before you can finally call it quits. It can be very difficult to track down the parts to make an old car run like it did in its prime. However, there are some tips that you can use to find the parts you need.

Check that the bolt pattern matches the vehicle and specifications of the car manufacturer. Make sure it doesn't have bends, nicks or scraps to avoid alignment problems. These defects are usually caused by accidents.

The first thing to do when you want to purchase a spare part from a junkyard is to call the junkyard and request for the part. Of course, you have to give details of the vehicle such as the brand, model, when it was manufactured and the spare part you need. A search would have to be conducted on the available parts and if they do have it, then they would let you know. Vehicles disposed in junkyards are assessed for the useful parts both inside and outside which are collected. When you arrive at the junkyard, you would be allowed to see the spare part and if you decide to purchase it, payment is made right there.

Advertise your car. If you're not satisfied with the offers from the salvage yards, you may be able to make more money by selling it directly. You can advertise on Craigslist or some other website, giving details about your car. Include photos and be honest about the car's condition. Put down an asking prices such as $500 or OBO for "or best offer" and wait for people to contact you. One man's junk is another man's treasure -- you could be holding a classic that would be worth a mint once it has been restored.
