Three Ways You Can Malding Like Google
a few weeks ago, they asked me to write an article on one of the paintings by Hopper and one of the Nighthawks, and I, as a good researcher, went to inform me. Since it is generally known, or at least is taught by experience, to understand a painting, one needs to know its history as well as the artist and most importantly the context in which he painted it. Art is definitely something universal, transversal to the space and time, and therefore accessible even after centuries. However, the interpretations alter, as does the way society and the world evolve and what used to be seen clearly, possibly several years after, is not so obvious. What was never considered prior to, today could reveal the work to us in a different manner.

Re-defining a piece of work in the course of time
This is similar to what I think happens when you see Hopper's " Nighthawks" that was shut at the bar, late at evening, and in the window wich looks like the inside of a fish tank, in the location of the characters that are observed.

I believe that , in the painting Hopper would have wanted to provide space for the viewer to allow viewers to take in the quiet, detailed and calm scene given to us by the night.

This particular space, created to be a place for active viewing, is perhaps the keystone, which allows the painting to be reinterpreted throughout time and, consequently, to remain timeless, eternal contemporary, and contemporary.

The work, created in 1942, isn't immediately linked to a specific historical moment however it appears that its date can be altered depending on the changing viewer, depending on the time in which the work is observed.

My opinion is that this is the key to reading, the space that is occupied by the observer that Hopper wanted to create.

I'll explain.

While researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able to observe how many describe it by highlighting these elements:

"[...] the feeling of emptiness of a world whose shimmering patina starts to lose its luster. [...] The distinctly commercial character lies, the myths rip off their masks to reveal the world as a blurred reality, with no any valid reference points , immobilized by uncertainty and unconscience. "

The night and the transformation
I believe this interpretation is a little ambiguous, that is, it's an interpretation influenced in the context of society as well as by the dates associated with the work: the United States between the 40s and 50s during the economic boom that was redefining the social and cultural assets in the lives of individuals in a society that was even a bit bourgeois where night bars are seen as places of solitude and despair, as well as a sense of emptiness.

It's a little true, but slightly not.

The first time I saw this painting, and without having studied, it gave me a lot of peace and joy, thanks to its vibrant contrast and quiet nocturnal quality.

Maybe, coming from an extremely noisy and crowded city, nighttime is one of the moments that I am able to enjoy the city in a more peaceful way with fewer people in the area more cars as well as less noise. There are also more spaces between the streets to make the most of, and which place to rest under the night sky that is starless. The night is a different meaning for me than those who went to bars in America. United States during the 40s When the sun sets down the city changes its appearance and the streets are more open and simple.

It is impossible to ignore the way society has changed over the course of more than half a century of social and cultural changes, in between Pop as well as Rock culture, and between the psychedelic movement and the 2000s.

Personally, as a child in the 90s, I was also a night-time kid and by "growing up" I am referring to everything "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. It is for me common to be out at night usually walking around the neighborhood, and on Saturdays looking for the most memorable party, dancing until dawn and riding around on a motorbike or car to locate the last bar that is open to get the bread or hot pizza or hot pizza, and then where to sip the last glass and light the last cigarette before dawn was set. Maybe from malding , the night stopped frightening those who stayed at home (let's not forget the jazz movement, anti-prohibitionism and even the Cursed Poets who were all great nights owls) and has since become the cradle where many personalities are able to enjoy the tranquility and security of the other nightclubs.

Hopper's contemporary realist style
The painting of Hopper today reminds me of a variety of scenes from modern life. It make me feel happy and, in all likelihood, sympathetic, with the three main characters who engage in a chat while the bartender is cleaning the bar to end the bar and begin a new. Those nocturnes seek rest in the silence of the nocturnal company, contemplate their lives, watching them through a glass and form a group of the night, welcoming everyone and judging no one. It is no coincidence that in the oldest civilisations, such as the Indian one that the time between midnight and dawn is called Brahmamuhurta which is also known as the time of Brahma, the best time to devote oneself to prayer, meditation as well as study and reflection. In this space of time the energies are more acute, intense but of an ethereal, spiritual focus.

There is no solitude nor emptiness in Hopper's painting; I saw more of it in the gentrified streets of the night quarters, as even the right-thinking citizens began going out in the evening.

That's why even the most famous and oldest areas had to be turned into consumer showcases; and the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square had to rearrange their groups in line, waiting for their turn; and the music of the drums on the other side of the street was slowed by police sirens. This is what worries me today because the night is desnatured by its sacred timeless atmosphere and by the fact that it is an occasion of aggregation for the lone wolves, and is now an additional uncovering tool of the system that demands transparency and respectability from the darkest corners of the city.
