Celebrities’ Guide To Something: What You Need To Malding
A few weeks ago, they requested I write an article about one of the paintings by Hopper, the Nighthawks and I, being an excellent researcher, went to find out. Since malding is generally known or at the very least, taught by experience, to understand a painting, it is necessary to know the history of the painting, the author and most importantly the setting in the context in which Hopper painted it. It is surely something universal, transversal to time and space, making it is recognizable over the course of centuries. However, the interpretations alter, as does the way society and the world evolve and what used to be seen clearly, possibly decades ago, is now evident. What was never considered prior to is now revealing the process to us in a totally different manner.

Re-defining a piece of work in the course of time
This is similar to what I think happens when you see Hopper's " Nighthawks" which was closed by the bar, late at night, in that window wich looks like the inside of a fish tank, in the same position as the characters he observed.

I believe that in this painting, Hopper was trying to open up space to the viewer, allowing him to look at the silent tranquil, precise and serene scene given to us by the darkness.

The space, designed for an active viewer could be the keystone that allows the artwork to be reinterpreted in the course of time, and to remain timeless, eternal, modern, even very modern.

The piece, which was created in 1942, isn't immediately attributable to an exact historical moment however it appears that its date can be altered according to the changes in the viewer, according to the exact time at which the work is observed.

I believe this is the key to reading, the space that is occupied by the observer that Hopper desired to create.

I'll explain.

Researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able observe how many describe it by highlighting these elements:

"[...] the feeling of emptiness of the world that's shimmering patina begins to give way [...] The distinctively commercial character, the false myths take off their masks and show a displaced reality, without valid points of reference Isolated by doubt and unconscience. "

The night and the transformation
I believe this interpretation is partial, that is, it's a interpretation provided from the socio-cultural context and by the dating associated with the work that took place in the United States between the 40s and 50s, during the boom in economics that redefined social and cultural assets in the life of people who lived in a society which is even a bit bourgeois where night bars are seen as places of isolation, despair and existential emptiness.

It's true in a certain degree, and it's not the whole truth.

The first time I saw this painting, and without having studied it, it gave me a lot of happiness and peace with its bright contrast and quiet nocturnal quality.

If I'm from a large busy and noisy city, night is one of the times when I can experience the city more calmly: fewer people around, fewer cars as well as less noise. There are also more spaces between the streets to choose, and the best place to be, beneath the city's starless sky. The night is a different meaning for me from the people who drank in bars across The United States during the 40s as the sun's path down the city changes its face, the streets become more free and easy.

It is impossible to ignore the way society has transformed itself through more than a half century of cultural and social changes, between Pop and Rock culture, between psychoedelic movement in the 1990s and 2000s.

As a girl of the 90s, was also a night-time kid, and by growing up I'm referring to everything "formative" experiences that the night brought me. For me it is always common to be out at night usually walking through the neighborhood on weekends, searching for the best party, dancing until the early hours while riding a motorbike, or car to find the last bar open you can grab a bread or hot pizza, where to drink the last glass and light the last cigarette before dawn arrived. Perhaps from the 80s onwards, the night stopped frightening those who stayed at their homes (let's take a look at the anti-prohibitionism movement and jazz movement and the Cursed Poets all of them perfect evening owls) and it became the cradle where many personalities of society find the tranquility and security of the other nighthawks.

Hopper's modern Realism
Nowadays Hopper's painting reminds me of numerous scenes from contemporary life, and make me feel satisfied and sympathize with the last three characters, who have with the bartender as he is cleaning the bar to end the day and then open another. Those nocturnes seek rest in the silence of their nocturnal companions, meditate on their lives observing them through a glass . They meet as a tribe in the night, welcoming everyone and judging no one. It's no accident that in the most ancient civilisations, such as the Indian one the half hour before dawn is called Brahmamuhurta which is also known as the time of Brahma which is the ideal moment to commit yourself to prayer, meditation as well as study and reflection. This is the time of day when the energy is more intense, intense but of an ethereal, spiritual focus.

There is no solitude nor empty space in Hopper's painting. I found more among the gentrified streets of the night quarters, since even the right-thinking people started going out at night.

So that, even malding and historic areas were transformed into consumer showcases; and the spontaneous aggregations of people who gathered in the square were required to arrange their groups in line waiting to get their turn; and the music of the drums along the side of the street was drowned out by the police sirens. It is a worry for me now because the night is shattered by its mystical, timeless ambience, by its being an opportunity for aggregation of lone wolves, and becoming another uncover productive gear of the system, demanding the highest level of professionalism and clarity even in the darkest parts within the cities.
