a few weeks ago, they asked I write an article on a painting by Hopper, one of the Nighthawks and I, being a good researcher, went to inform me. Since it is generally known or at the least learned from experience, that to comprehend a painting it is necessary to know the history of the painting and the painter, and, most importantly, the context within which he painted it. Art is definitely an universal thing, that transcends both space and time making it accessible even after many centuries. malding change, along with how society and the world evolve, and what previously could be easily seen, maybe years after, is not so obvious. What was never considered prior to now could be revealing the work to us in a totally different manner.
Re-defining a work over time
This is similar to what I imagine happens when you see the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks" which was closed by the bar, late at late at night, with that window, which resembles a fish tank, in the location of the characters that are who were observed.
I believe that , in this work, Hopper would have wanted to provide space for the viewer to allow viewers to take in the quiet tranquil, precise and serene scene that we are presented by the night.
The space, designed for an active viewer could be the keystone that allows the artwork to be reinterpreted throughout time and, consequently, to remain timeless, eternal, modern, even very modern.
The painting, made in 1942, is not immediately attributable to an exact time period however it appears that its date can be altered depending on the changing viewers, based on the moment at which the work is observed.
In my opinion this is what is essential to reading, the space dedicated by the observer that Hopper desired to create.
I'll explain.
While researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able observe how many describe the film by highlighting these aspects:
"[...] the solitude, the feeling of emptiness of a world whose shimmering patina starts to lose its luster. [...] The distinctly commercial character of the myths is that they peel off their masks and reveal a displaced reality, without reliable sources of reference in the face of uncertainty and unconscience. "
The night and the transformation
I think this interpretation is a little ambiguous, that is, it's a interpretation provided from the socio-cultural context and by the dates attributed to the work that took place in The United States between the 40s and 50s, in the period of economic growth that was redefining the social and cultural assets in the lives of individuals, a society that is even a bit bourgeois where nightclubs are viewed as places of loneliness, despair and existential emptiness.
It's true in a certain degree, and slightly not.
First time that I came across this painting, and without having studied it, it gave me lots of peace and joy, thanks to its vibrant contrast and quiet nocturnal quality.
Maybe, coming from the midst of a huge, noisy and bustling metropolis, the night is one of those times that I am able to enjoy the city in a more peaceful way: fewer people around, fewer cars and less noise, more space between the streets to make the most of, and the best place to be, beneath the starless urban sky. Night has a completely different meaning for me from the people who drank in bars across the United States during the 40s as the sun's path down, the city transforms its face, the streets are more open and simple.
It is impossible to ignore the way society has evolved in more than half a century of cultural and social changes. This is the case between Pop and Rock culture, and between the psychoedelic movement in the 1990s and 2000s.
Personally, as a child in the 90s, I was also a night-time kid and by "growing up" I am referring to every one of the "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. It is for me common to be out in the evening, often walking through the streets, and on weekends, searching for the perfect party, dancing until dawn while riding a motorbike, or car to locate the last bar that is open you can grab a bread or hot pizza and where you can drink the last glass and light the last cigarette before sunrise came. Perhaps from the 80s afterward, the night no longer frightening those who stayed at the house (let's keep in mind the anti-prohibitionism movement, jazz music and even the notorious Cursed Poets all of them perfect nights owls) and has since become the place where many of the prominent personalities of society find the comfort and peace of other nighthawks.
Hopper's modern realist style
Nowadays Hopper's painting reminds me of many scenes of real day life. It makes me feel happy and, in all likelihood, sympathetic, with the last three characters who engage in a chat while the bartender clears the bar in order to conclude the bar and begin a new. People who are nocturnal seek peace in the solitude of their nocturnal companions, reflect on their lives by watching them through a glass . They meet as a tribe in the night, welcoming everyone , and never judging anyone. It is no coincidence that in the most ancient primitive civilizations like the Indian one, the half hour before sunrise is known as Brahmamuhurta which is also known as the time of Brahma, the best moment to commit oneself to prayer, meditation, study and introspection. In this time, the energy levels are higher and intense, but they are of a calm, spiritual intensity.
I see no solitude or empty space in Hopper's painting. I also found it among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters. This is because even the right-thinking people started drinking in the evening.
That's why even the most popular and historic areas were transformed into consumer showcases as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square had to rearrange themselves in line, waiting for their turn while the sound of the drums that played on the side of the street was slowed by police sirens. It is a worry for me now that nighttime is shattered by its mystical, timeless ambience as an occasion of aggregation for lone wolves, and becoming another uncover productive gear of the system, demanding transparency and respectability from the darkest corners within the cities.
