Ten Ways You Can Malding Like Oprah
a few weeks ago, they asked I write an article about the work of Hopper and one of the Nighthawks and I, being a good researcher, went to find out. Because it is known or at the least learned from experience, that in order to appreciate a painting one must know its history and the painter, and most importantly the setting in the which it was painted. Art is definitely something universal, transcendent to time and space, making it accessible even after hundreds of years. The meanings alter, as does the way society and the world evolve and what used to be seen clearly, possibly decades ago, is now so obvious. What was not considered before, today could reveal our work in a different manner.

Re-meaning a work through time
It's a little like what I imagine happens when you view the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks", closed at the bar, late at late at night, with that window, which resembles the inside of a fish tank, in the same position as the characters he who were observed.

I believe that , in the painting Hopper would have wanted to provide space for the viewer to allow viewers to take in the quiet serene, well-detailed and peaceful scene given to us by the dark night.

The space, designed to be a place for active viewing, is perhaps the keystone, which allows the painting to change throughout time and, consequently, to be timeless, immortal and even modern.

The work, created in 1942, isn't immediately attributable to a precise historical moment however it appears that its dating is changeable according to the changes in the viewers, based on the time in which the work is observed.

In my opinion this is what is essential to reading, the time and space occupied by the observer that Hopper was hoping to create.

I'll explain.

In my research for information and news about Hopper's " Nighthawks", I was able to be aware of how many people have described it by highlighting these elements:

"[...] the loneliness, the sense of emptiness of an environment whose glistening patina starts to lose its luster. [...] The distinctively commercial element lies, the myths rip off their masks and show the world as a blurred reality, with no any valid reference points , immobilized by uncertainty and a lack of morality. "

Night and transformation
I am of the opinion that this interpretation is partial and, therefore, it's a interpretation provided in the context of society as well as by the date that is attributed to the work that took place in it was the United States between the 40s and 50s during the boom in economics that redefined social and cultural assets in the lives of the people who lived in a society which is even a bit bourgeois, where night bars are seen as places of loneliness, despair and existential emptiness.

It's a little true, but slightly not.

The first time I saw this painting, and without having studied, it gave me happiness and peace with its bright contrast and its quiet nocturnal quality.

Maybe, coming from the midst of a huge, noisy and bustling city, nighttime is one of those times where I can enjoy the city in a more peaceful way: fewer people around, fewer cars as well as less noise. There are also more spaces between the streets to make the most of, and the best place to be, beneath the night sky that is starless. The night is a different meaning to me than those who went to bars in America. United malding during the 40s as the sun's path down and the city is transformed into its appearance and streets become more open and easy.

malding is impossible to ignore the way society has evolved in more than half a century of cultural and social changes. This is the case that occurred between Pop and Rock culture, and between the popular psychedelic scene as well as the decade 2000.

Personally, as a child of the 90s, I grew up also at night and by "growing up" I mean all the "formative" experiences that the night brought me. It is for me common to be out after dark, often walking around the neighborhood, and on weekends, searching for the most memorable party, dancing until dawn, riding a motorbike or driving around in search of the last bar open you can grab a croissant or hot pizza or hot pizza, and then where to sip the last glass and smoke the last puff before dawn came. From the 80s and onwards, the night stopped in a way that scared those who stayed their homes (let's keep in mind the anti-prohibitionism movement, jazz music and even the notorious Cursed Poets all of them perfect nights owls) and it became the place where many of the prominent personalities of society find the comfort and peace of other nighthawks.

Hopper's modern realist style
Nowadays Hopper's painting reminds me of numerous scenes from day life. It make me feel satisfied and sympathetic, with the three main characters who engage in with the bartender as he clears the bar in order to conclude a day and open another. The nocturnes want to rest in the quiet of their nightly companions. They meditate on their lives observing them through a glass . They form a group of the night, welcoming everyone and judging no one. It's not a coincidence that in the oldest ancestral civilizations such as the Indian one that the time between midnight and dawn is known as Brahmamuhurta which is also known as the time of Brahma which is the ideal moment to commit yourself to prayer, meditation, study and introspection. In this time, the energy levels are higher as well as intense but with a calm, spiritual intensity.

I see no solitude or emptiness in Hopper's painting; I saw more of it in the gentrified streets of the night quarters, as even the right-thinking people started drinking in the evening.

That's why even the most popular and historic areas were transformed into marketplaces for consumers as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square were required to arrange themselves in line waiting to get their turn to be seated; and the beat of the drums along the side of the street was slowed by the police sirens. It is a worry for me now that nighttime is degraded by its sacred , timeless atmosphere, by its being a moment of aggregation for lone wolves, and becoming an additional uncovering tool of the system, demanding transparency and respectability in the most secluded corners of the city.
