few weeks ago they asked me to write an article on one of the paintings by Hopper, the Nighthawks and I, as a good researcher, went to find out. Since it is generally known, or at least is taught by experience, to comprehend a painting one needs to know its history, the author and above all the context in the context in which Hopper painted it. Art is certainly something universal, transcendent to both space and time making it is recognizable over the course of hundreds of years. However, the interpretations are subject to change as society and the world change and what was once able to be seen clearly, possibly decades after, is not as obvious. What was not considered before now could be revealing our work in a totally different manner.
Re-meaning a work through time
It's a little like the scene I see when you view Hopper's " Nighthawks", closed at the bar late in the evening, and in the window, which resembles the inside of a fish tank, in the location of the characters that are observed.
I believe that , in the painting Hopper wanted to give space for the viewer to allow viewers to take in the quiet serene, well-detailed and peaceful scene given to us by the dark night.
The space, designed for an active viewer could be the keystone, which allows the painting to be changed over time and consequently to be timeless, immortal contemporary, and modern.
The painting, made in 1942, is not immediately linked to a specific time period however it appears that its date can be altered with the change of the viewer, according to the exact time at which the piece is seen.
My opinion is that this is the key to reading, the time and space occupied by the observer that Hopper was hoping to create.
I'll explain.
Researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks", I was able to be aware of how many people have described it , highlighting the following elements:
"[...] the feeling of being empty in an environment whose glistening patina begins to give way [...] The distinctly commercial essence, the false myths take off their masks and show a displaced reality, without reliable sources of reference Isolated by doubt and a lack of morality. "
Night and transformation
I am of the opinion that this interpretation is not complete, that is, it's a interpretation provided in the context of society and by the dating associated with the work of the United States between the 40s and 50s, during the economic boom that was redefining the social and cultural values in the lives of individuals, a society that is even a bit bourgeois where nightclubs are viewed as places of solitude and despair, as well as a sense of emptiness.
It's a little true, but it's not the whole truth.
First time that I saw the painting without having studied it, it brought me a lot of peace and joy, thanks to its bright contrast and nighttime stillness.
Maybe, coming from the midst of a huge, noisy and bustling metropolis, the night is one of the times when I can experience the city more calmly: fewer people around more cars and less noise, more spaces between the streets to make the most of, and where to stay , under the city's starless sky. Night has a completely different meaning for me than those who went to bars in the United States during the 40s When the sun sets down the city changes its appearance, and streets become more open and easy.
It is impossible to ignore the way society has changed over the course of more than half a century of social and cultural shifts, in between Pop and Rock culture, between the popular psychedelic scene and the 2000s.
Personally, as a child in the 90s, I was also a night-time kid and by "growing up" I mean everything "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. It is for me common to be out at night and walk around the neighborhood, and on weekends, searching for the best party, dancing until the early hours and riding around on a motorbike or car to locate the last open bar where you can grab a croissant or hot pizza or hot pizza, and then where to sip the last glass and light the last cigarette before sunrise was set. From the 80s and onwards, the night stopped frightening those who stayed at their homes (let's take a look at the anti-prohibitionism movement, jazz music and even the Cursed Poets, all perfect night owls) and it has become the cradle where many personalities of society find the comfort and peace of other nightclubs.
Hopper's modern realism
Nowadays Hopper's painting reminds me of many scenes of real modern life. It make me feel happy and, in all likelihood, sympathetic, with the three main characters who engage in an exchange of words while the bartender cleans the bar to close a day and open another. Those nocturnes seek rest in the quiet of their nocturnal companions, meditate on their lives observing them through a glass . They meet as a tribe in the night, welcoming everyone , and never judging anyone. It's not a coincidence that in the most ancient ancestral civilizations such as the Indian one the half hour before dawn is called Brahmamuhurta or the time of Brahma which is the ideal time to devote oneself to meditation, prayer studying, and contemplation. malding is the time of day when the energy levels are higher as well as intense but with tranquil, spiritual intensity.
I see no solitude or emptiness in Hopper's painting; I saw more of it in the gentrified streets of the night quarters. This is because even the right-thinking people started going out at night.
So that, even the most popular and historic neighborhoods had to be transformed into showcases for the consumer as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people who gathered in the square had to arrange themselves in line waiting to get their turn while the sound of the drums on the other side of the street was drowned out by the police sirens. It is a worry for me now that nighttime is desnatured by its mystical, timeless ambience, by its being a moment of aggregation for individuals, and by becoming an unintentional and productive element of the system, requiring clarity and respectability even in the most secluded corners within the cities.
