One glue trap ends days of searching for venomous zebra cobras in north Raleigh.
Despite the efforts of animal control officers and law enforcement, law enforcement and animal control officers trapped the venomous snake on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday night, a 48-hour incident that generated nationwide interest.

A red bucket was used to guide the cobra into a safe location where all glue could be removed from its body.

A striped snake was captured by WRAL cameras crawling onto a front porch on Sandringham Drive earlier in the day. In looking around, the hood of the vulture was visible.

After confirming it was a snake, Animal Control officers moved the camera crews back of the area and attempted to capture it there.

911 call from that same house sparked the search at the beginning of Tuesday.

ARLINGTON, N.C. Following hours of consultation and preparation by police and animal control officers, a venomous zebra cobra was captured with a glue trap on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday night, bowing out a nearly 48-hour ordeal that gained national attention.

Cobras were placed inside red buckets and taken to a safe location so the glue could be removed completely from their bodies.

The WRAL cameras captured the striped snake crawling out of the siding of a Sandringham Drive house, onto the front porch. Lifting its head, its hood could be seen.

After confirming it was a snake, Animal Control officers moved the camera crews back of the area and attempted to capture it there.

911 call from that same house sparked the search at the beginning of Tuesday.

The ordeal has ended, said Joan Nelson, her neighbor.

I feel much safer and I am really happy, she said. Having gone outside, I feel as though I can now go on my deck and walk around. The snake, though, must have felt bad.

Veterinary specialist Salina Locke treats all kinds of pets at Avian and Exotic Animal Care in Nashville, Tennessee.

Cobras of this type are rarely known to bite. They spray their venom more often -- they are very accurate and attack straight in the eye, according to her.

Despite the risks involved, Locke does not recommend keeping this snake as a pet.

Most bites occur while people are sleeping. Research shows that people who are bit may suffer health issues for years.

In the afternoon of Tuesday, police searched a home in 6917 Chamonix Place, near the spot where the cobra was first spotted.

According to county records, Keith and Rebecca Gifford live at that address. An account linked to Keith Gifford's name features several photos of snakes belonging to his son, Christopher.
