I. Instructions in short: Write something, give the meaning or define the following in 2 to 3 sentences.
1. Old English- The Old English started in 450 to 1100 AD. The oldest English poem was Beowulf. This story contains 3,000 lines, and it is the first English epic (a story in poetry of the adventures of a brave man or men).
2. Beowulf- Beowulf is from southern Sweden who goes to help the King of Danes. Beowulf attacks the terrible creature named Grendel. And later, Beowulf had to defend his country from a fire-breathing dragon and kills it but is badly wounded, and dies.
3. Middle English- The Middle English started in 1100 to 1500. An example of middle English is the Canterbury tales by Greoffrey Chaucer. And then in 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy (part of modern France), invaded and conquered England

5. Early Modern English- Early modern English started in 1500 end ended in 1800. And a passage from “King Lear” in the 1623 First Folio written in Early Modern English by William Shakespeare. Towards the end of Middle English, a sudden and distinct change in pronunciation (the Great Vowel Shift) started, with vowels being pronounced shorter and shorter.
6. Late Modern English- Late modern English in 1800 present. There was the same passage from “King Lear” by William Shakespeare was written in Late modern English. And the main difference between Early Modern English and Late Modern English is vocabulary.
II. Describe the following important people in the history or English. What are their great contributions in the English language?
1. Angles- Angles came from England and their great contribution in English language is by
2. Greoffrey Chaucer- Greoffrey Chaucer's great contribution in English language is by writing the Canterbury tales.
3. William the Conqueror- William the Conqueror the Duke of Normandy's great contribution in English language is by invading and conquering England.
