Why You Should Do Plumbing Cleaning While Stuck At Home
The last thing on your mind is probably cleaning your plumbing. Unfortunately, as you spend more time alone at home, the health of your plumbing will become increasingly critical. You don't want to be stuck at home with a clogged toilet or a broken faucet.

There are plenty of ways you can ensure your plumbing stays fully functional at the moment. It's a great idea to take care of your plumbing fixtures if you're looking for simple, productive ways to take your mind off of things. Cleaning and maintaining these five items is easy, quick, and doesn't require many tools:

Drains need cleaning
Typically, drain clogs don't all occur at once. The result is that over time, dirt and grime accumulate inside your drain pipes. Preventing most future clogs is easier if you clean out that gunk early. You should occasionally clear your sink, shower, and tub drains even if you don't feel they are clogged. This is the perfect opportunity! A little white vinegar, baking soda, and hot water are all you need.

Put around a cup of baking soda down your drain as a first step. Afterward, add a cup of white vinegar and let the mixture sit for 15 minutes. You can repeat this process on each of your drains while you wait. Boil one cup of water for every drain you want to clean. One cup of hot water should be poured into each drain after 15 minutes. Baking soda and vinegar react chemically to break up gunk in your drains, and then hot water is used to flush it away.

Every sink has a trap beneath it, a curved pipe that connects the drain pipe to the sewer line. Some traps are called p-traps, s-traps, or u-traps, depending on the shape of their curves. Water is meant to be captured by the curve of the trap when it's flushed down the drain. A seal created by the water prevents sewer gases from rising back up through the drain. Inadvertently flushing other stuff down the drain can clog traps.


Fortunately, traps can be removed and cleaned easily. Locate the trap beneath the sink first. Each slip nut is connected to each pipe via two slip nuts on a curved piece of metal or PVC. Wear rubber gloves and place a bucket below the trap. It can be separated by loosening the slip nuts, either by hand or with a wrench. Then pour everything out into the bucket. Scrub out the trap to make sure nothing is stuck inside. Replace the trap with the slip nuts tightened after you're finished cleaning. Run the sink to be sure it's working properly.

Maintain your showerheads
Your shower may not be working in the way it used to. The cause of the problem is a seemingly simple one: it is probably the showerhead. Your showerheads' nozzles can get clogged as scale build-up, minerals, and other gunk accumulate. When your home has hard water, this happens more often. You can get the most out of your shower by cleaning your showerhead.

To do this, there are a couple of options. In the first place, try soaking an old toothbrush in a cleaning solution and scrubbing it against the nozzles. You can also try throwing in a plastic bag 1 cup of boiling hot water, 1 cup of vinegar, and 1 cup of baking soda (remember this?) if that doesn't work. Put the bag around the showerhead so the nozzles will be submerged. Finally, try taking apart the showerhead according to the manufacturer's instructions. Clean the filter inside the showerhead in the sink. Clean the nozzles from the inside, too.

Shower grout must be cleaned of mold
Due to mold spores' ubiquitous nature, it can spread in any environment conducive to its growth. A true mold problem can arise in bathrooms, especially in showers because of the moist, dark environment in which it thrives. A shower with gaps between tiles offers the perfect environment for mold to take hold. If left unchecked, mold growth could spread to the rest of your bathroom. When it gets bad enough, it could even negatively affect your health.

Prepare your bathroom for use by ventilating it properly. Turn on the overhead fan and open the window if possible. Pour a cleaning solution, such as vinegar (again!) into a spray bottle. Directly spray the solution into the space you want to clean. Use a coarse scrub brush to remove the mold. To reach between tiles, an old toothbrush may work well. Using caulk, you can restore worn-out grout after cleaning it.
