Refinishing Wood Countertops
While many homeowners may have heard of wood countertops, very few have any idea what types of wood are used to make them. This is unfortunate, because there are several popular types of wood that are used in making countertops, each with their own unique look and style. Below is a short guide to the most common types of wood used for countertops.


Probably the most popular of wood countertops is bamboo. Bamboo is quite affordable and has a wide variety of colors available. Some of the most popular wood varieties of bamboo to use for a countertop are: Redwood, Spruce, Plywood, Beech and Hickory. All of these have different looks and properties, but all have the ability to be beautiful in your kitchen. They are sometimes more expensive than other types of wood, but the price you pay for beautiful, durable Bamboo wood countertops is well worth it. Spruce and plywood are also popular options for wood countertops, though they do not have the natural warmth that Bamboo has.

All of the above mentioned countertops have the ability to be hand-finish or machine-finish, depending on what type of finish is used. Hand-finished countertops are generally lower in cost than machine-finished countertops, though not always. Machine-finished countertops can also be hand-finished or machine-polished, but generally cost more than traditional hand-finishes. These finishes help to make the surface of your countertops either glossy or matte, depending on your preference.

For the most natural look, you will want to use a soft damp cloth to help remove any scratches or other imperfections from your wood countertops. Any imperfections in the wood will make the surface look older than it is, so paying a little extra for a better finish is well worth it in the long run. Also, be sure to keep your damp cloth with you when refinishing. It's quite possible that you will miss a spot or two, so it's nice to have your cloth with you at all times. You may even want to bring it with you when doing your actual refinishing job.

After you have sanded your wood countertops to your desired finish, you will then want to apply a clear coat to protect the block from any further blemishes. Once you have finished sanding and polishing your countertops, you will probably want to apply a coat of protection. This will help keep your countertops from being damaged by hot pans or other hot items placed on them. Extra care should be taken to make sure that the protective coat is applied properly. If you notice bubbles developing around the edge of your countertops, or if there are small chips in your finish, you may need to remove the chip before applying the new finish.
