How to Create a Green Wall With Succulents
Over the years, our nursery has become involved in many interesting projects that benefit from the diverse characteristics of succulents. One of the most intriguing was the preparation of some green walls to get a flower show in San Francisco. The designer wanted some large panels with geometric shapes, plus a smaller "picture" to hang together. When it was completed, we felt this project was highly successful, so we wished to share our process for creating green walls.
The first challenge ended up being make support structure that might keep your plants set up, and enable for care. We settled on a plywood back, having a wood edge, after which horizontal metal flashing for "shelves" every 12 inches to keep the soil. The shelves were coupled to the plywood backing with short screws. Drip tubes were placed along the bottom of each shelf when the panel was placed upright, the tubes can be along the top of each "layer of soil. With proper emitter spacing, each soil "shelf" may be watered along its entire width.
All with the layers were stuffed with potting soil. You should use as finely textured potting soil as possible find, considering that the drainage can be really good as a result of effective 12" depth in the soil (the space between the "shelves".) A layer of forest moss was positioned on surface of the potting soil and then one inch chicken wire was placed through the whole panel retained by attaching the edges towards the plywood edge. You will also must wire the chicken wire either for the shelves or to the plywood panel wires to keep your "face" from bulging out when the panel is positioned upright.
The panels were planted through the chicken wire and moss inside pattern specified by the designer. Succulents give you a good variety of leaf shapes and color which you can use to create a broad range of textures and design. Be sure to take into account the final size of the plants when you develop your design.
After planting, panels were grown inside a horizontal position prior to the succulents were well-established.
