Notes

It is market day, and Cassie has always wanted to go. Big Ma brings Stacey, who is friends again with T.J., and Cassie with her to market day in Strawberry because she has to bring T.J., and she does not like him, thinking him obnoxious. Once at Strawberry, Cassie is disappointed, and when Big Ma parks the wagon far from the entrance of the market, she asks why. Big Ma replies that it is because the spots near the entrance are for the white people. After eating their lunch, Big Ma, T.J., Stacey, and Cassie go to Mr. Jamison's office, and Big Ma goes in after telling the children to stay in the wagon. After T.J. convinces Stacey and Cassie to go to the mercantile to do the shopping, Mr. Barnett waits on other white people, and they have to wait for a long time. When Cassie sees Mr. Barnett filling an order for a little white girl, she concludes that he had forgotten about them and reminds him, pulling on his sleeve. Mr. Barnett gets angry when he tells Cassie to wait some more, but she refuses, and Stacey has to drag her out of the store. Cassie doesn't follow him once out of the store but instead walks down the street where she bumps into Lillian Jean, who gets angry and tells her to get down into the road. When Cassie refuses, she and her father, Mr. Simms, push Cassie into the road. Mr. Simms and Big Ma, who had just come, force Cassie to apologize to Lillian, and Cassie is extremely upset.
