Orthum’s great window

The largest scatterdawn is over 70 feet across and 40 feet through, located at a side-entrance to the cavern city of Orthum. It provides daylight to a city which would otherwise be shrouded in darkness due to it’s location 40 feet under the base of the region’s tallest mountain. It is held in idolship by followers of Sola’s Path, who believe it to be a granting from their god of the sun to bring daylight to all of her devout followers, and it is known colloquially as Orthum’s Grand Window. A shrine is built at the end of the path that leads up to it, allowing for worship.

It has a notable property of being unable to conduct the arcane, due to it’s overwhelming and abnormal size.

It is said to be an artifact of the world’s birth, as such a large scatterdawn could have only been born of immense arcane activity.

It was uncovered by wider society early into construction of the city of Orthum, as it is said that the family of Ralunder (a noble family) lived in the area during construction, and led workers to see. The Ralunder family were made nobles of Orthum, and are now designated to upkeep of the stone.

The city of Orthum is designed around the gaze of it’s great window, with the city’s lampposts having smaller scatterdawns atop them, to further redirect the light amongst the city. It is also a religious symbol alongside Sola’s crest.

It is also of notably magnificent quality compared to the typical translucency of other naturally occurring scatterdawns due to the fact that it is crystal clear, leading devout to believe it is truly a gift from Sola the maiden of the sun, and skeptics to believe it was placed there manually during the city’s construction.

On the exterior, the light-receiving face of the scatterdawn of Orthum is 8 feet across and tall, and shows on the side of a mountain. The cave nearby its face is a common site for pilgrimages and offerings to Sola, though getting any closer (100 meters) to the face of the window is strictly prohibited, and it is constantly under surveillance, since covering up the face could plunge the city into darkness.

Only the Ralunder family and those they grant access are allowed near the face. However, the Ralunders do head a university, where it is rumoured that it’s greatest students of a year are taken to view the outside face.
