Apparently, CBD oil is in everything. People who live with chronic conditions like pain or anxiety have probably heard of CBD.
With the advent of medical marijuana and recreational marijuana in certain states, the market has seen a large influx of readily available CBD, including CBD oil for PETs that can treat pain, anxiety, seizures, and more.
Cannabis sativa is one of the many plants that contain cannabidiol (CBD). Purity Preferred (tetrahydrocannabinol) is another active compound, and the one most commonly associated with getting high.
CBD oil for PETs is not as well understood as CBD oil for humans, and it is unknown if it works. According to the American Kennel Club, no formal studies have been conducted in how this affects PETs. Our expert confirmed this.
Does it actually help with pain or just make people numb? "We don't know, but they seem to be less reactive to low level pain stimuli, such as arthritis and things like that, when they take the product," explains Dr. Mark Verdino, senior vice president and chief of veterinary staff at North Shore Animal League America. They seem less reactive to certain anxieties as well.
CBD is non-psychoactive, but it has the same medical benefits as THC. This means that your pet can benefit from the therapeutic effects of THC without having to worry about getting stoned which is clear to pet owners that that would be upsetting.
There is no psychotic ingredient in CBD oil, and Verdino does not know how it actually works to accomplish what they're claiming it will do. We're not sure, but they seem to be less sensitive to lower-level pain stimuli, such as arthritis and things like that, when they take this product. They do not seem as reactive to certain anxieties.
It is the doctor's experience that CBD helps to calm his own pet, a senior dog who gets jumpy at night.
During the night he gets a little scared when the lights are dimmed and it is dark out. He just seems to go to sleep when I give him CBD.
Of course, the question is how it's going. Verdino asks, Is it helping the anxiety or just making him sleepy? I don't know why, but it seems to help. We have a symptom, and it helps with it.
Could there be risks? At the moment, we dont know. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved CBD for use in PETs (or humans) and has not issued dosing recommendations, and any medication or supplement carries the potential risk of reaction, so its important to try a small dose first and monitor how your PET reacts to it.
Verdino had some words of advice if you choose to give your PET CBD, saying, I recommend people use a pet-specific product just so that they know that the concentration is appropriate, that theres nothing else in it to. because look, this is a fairly unregulated industry. These products include tinctures that come with a dropper that can easily be used to fill a pill pouch, such as Elevate for PETs. Other CBD treats include MediPets CBD Treats, Hemp My Pet biscuits, and King Kalm Crunch CBD treats.
Many CBD products on the market are offered in gummy form, and for good reason. In reality, there is nothing stopping a CBD company from flavoring their product with an artificial sweetener like Xylitol, which is toxic for animals. Consequently, I would choose a veterinary-specific product, and one that seems to be from a more reputable manufacturer, based on the doctor's opinion.
