Renewing Your Driving Licence
"Worryingly, our research has found that one in five (20%) UK drivers are unaware that licences have an expiry date, while one in 10 (11%) have driven while their licence had expired." So if your licence was due to expire in November 2020, your time to renew it would be sometime this month in October 2021. In fact, this should be done as soon as you move address, even if you’re not renewing. If you’ve moved house in the past decade, you’ll need to provide the new address – or risk a fine of up to £1,000 if stopped by the police.
"You can continue driving once you have received an acknowledgement that your application has been processed - just make sure you submit it asap." You also can't continue on the roads if you've been disqualified or no longer meet conditions that were specified on your previous licence. You must renew your licence as normal if it expires on or after January 1, 2021.

In the summer, the DVLA announced automatic seven-month extensions for drivers with photocard licences that expired between February 1 and August 31, but the scope of those extensions have grown. Drivers with licences expiring between February 1 and December 31 are now being granted longer 11-month extensions, meaning some drivers will not have to renew until the end of November 2021. For the first drivers to benefit from the extension it is now coming to an end and their licence will automatically expire unless they apply to renew it. Driving licences are usually valid for 10 years then must be renewed.
You must meet any conditions specified on your previous licence that still apply. Drivers must renew their licences at 70 and then every three years afterwards. It’s easy to run into trouble if you don’t check to ensure all renewal details are correct.

The time it will take to receive your new licence depends on your method of application. The relevant dates you need are on the front of your photocard licence, numbered as section 4. This is why you must update your licence before travelling abroad. From 1 January 2021, all drivers will need to renew their licence as normal. The DVLA is operating despite the current Covid-related restrictions. The first method is by filling in the D46P form and returning it to the DVLA with your current licence.
