Work Health and Safety professionals pursue numerous common objectives and comply with comparable rules. Whether you are a business owner, a PCBU, a Location Safety Officer, or part of my Occupational Safety Solutions group, we have particular subjects we typically deal with, in addition to things we rarely go over. It's those underlying things that I want to concentrate on today.
Sadly, my father passed away 3 weeks ago, and beyond the grief and sadness, his passing away has me believing outside packages we usually live in. He was a great guy, and I would've liked him to have actually had more time to buy my kids and myself, but that's not how it played out. He had a long innings, and he batted with tactical songs, noteworthy limits and even had some "smacked out of the premises for six" moments. Death, and specifically his death, has actually got me thinking about much deeper concerns.
We reside in complex and extremely misleading times. In the midst of this, the burdens being placed on companies are increasing, not only requiring more of our resources but likewise increasingly requiring compliance to frameworks of believing we and our workers may not always agree with. We're being forced off the well-worn paths, tracks and trails we're used to, and onto side-roads and goat tracks and into uncertain surface.
Do you relate to any of these emotions? Do you as a busy person, as I do, wrestle with harmonizing work, workers, family and friends? Do you also find it hard at times to believe beyond the apparent and the basics? If so, and you likewise discover these to be tough days, I thought I 'd offer a number of insights from my off-the-beaten-track thinking. I hope they assist!
THREE METHODS OF DESCRIBING WHS
The WHS function can be described plainly, considerably or with street-level bluntness:
Specified plainly ... WHS has to do with predicting what can fail, Strategising to prevent it happening, and assisting keep people safe.
Many people run from snakes, but safety specialists act in a different way. WHS needs us to anticipate the snake, keep it in view, know how to respond, train others to do similarly, keep unneeded snakes out, manage the snakes that are currently inside, and strategy for the ones that are birthed every day.
Specified bluntly ... WHS activities are about helping business owners cover their arse, abide by the law and keep their people safe.
These are the WHS components that are obvious. Let's speak about 3 subjects that don't get given much time.
A NUMBER OF WHS ASPECTS WE DON'T TEND TO DISCUSS
At a top level, we see standards, balances, procedures and checks. Underneath these top behaviours, guiding concepts are at work, with duty of care and due diligence blazing a trail. If we look even deeper, we see an extended range of factors, inspirations, philosophies and concepts, of which, there are 3 I want to discuss:
1. Ethical awareness,
2. Wrestling with morality, and
3. Managing and permitting feeling,
Think of them as path guides to assist you browse when federal government, scenarios, or your people require you off the well-worn courses that you are used to.
Work Health and Safety INCORPORATES ETHICS
You might not have believed much about its application in the safety context. In other words, morality is a system that informs us what is best and incorrect, and ethics is the application of those rights and wrongs in an offered scenario. It can be reasonably argued that ethics change over time, but morality is consistent.
Where does this fit in the WHS context? Ethics resembles a trail guide that tells you to get the rate, decrease, or step thoroughly. The virtue or morality is in reaching the location; ethics is worked out in getting there properly.
While most employees believe it is best to comment on dangerous situations (morality), however not all do (ethics). A lot of also understand it is right for them to fix a supervisor who is directing them to do something dangerous (morality), however lots of would not follow through on this conviction (ethics). There is frequently a space between morality and ethics and I have a strong suspicion that space was narrower in my dad's day.
The take-away: do not assume that morality is enough, or that the ethical behaviour seen in one work domain will also be evidenced in another. Reliable WHS isn't just about what is right; it's also about developing a work space where ethical behaviour is the standard. A few of the ideas that follow will help.
Work Health and Safety IS UNAPOLOGETICALLY MORAL
We have actually currently pointed out that morality is the art of knowing the difference between right and wrong, even when the ideal thing is less useful. It's the ethical equivalent of having 'a personal truth' - and in a workplace safety circumstance, that is a catastrophe waiting to occur.
My old man taught me that right is incorrect and best is wrong. Even when it hurts, right stays right, and incorrect stays wrong. Our workers might disagree on how right and wrong is decided, however workers need to come together when it pertains to Work Health and Safety. It's all right for an employee to know that their opinions and their morality have worth, but when it pertains to safety decisions, in all but the most exceptional of cases, the ethical thing to do is what the legislation states to do.
What if a manager, a fellow worker or federal government authority acts, needs or manoeuvres in an unethical method? Clearly, there are times when what is legal is also unethical; for example, both before and throughout World War Two the Nazi SS rounded up Jewish, Polish and homosexual individuals for damage.
The take-away for me, and maybe for you, is that something does not become immoral or moral due to the fact that the crowd or the law says it is. These days, I am aware that individual morality differs profoundly from person to person - perhaps more than ever previously. That brings a difficulty to my work environment because I need to wrestle with the ramifications of an ethically ambiguous truth. Clear communication and decisions will assist - but sticking my head in the sand will not.
Morality gives none people a free pass, and I reckon my father's generation understood that better than we do.
Work Health and Safety INVOLVES EMOTION
When it comes to emotions, there are two groups (or extremes) that tend to dominate. These emotions trigger hesitancy and trepidation, leading workers to not speak when they should. These emotions get in the way of effective communication, shut down open conversation and increase the likelihood of errors and hazards happening.
What are we to do? The workplace requires all kinds of characters, so all these emotions will make a look. We require to discover a method to deal with emotional extremes.
My father's generation was big on personal responsibility and simply "getting shit done". There was a clear expectation that the person would flex. Anxieties and world wars will do that to you. My generation was more thinking about self-esteem and understanding ourselves within a team-oriented context. However, today's youths appear to think the world focuses on their wants, their needs, and their truth. It's a dilemma and an exceptionally discouraging one at that.
Possibly there's a winning balance to be discovered in between, and I reckon honesty is a great location to begin. For example, a group leader can show the way by prefacing his comments to motivate emotional awareness and self-management. :
"I feel a little worried raising this, but I'm going to ..."
"Wait! Provide me a minute. I'm too f 'n mad and I'm gon na state something we'll both remorse."
"I don't mind if you do 'you' at house. When we're here, we do 'us'!
WHAT'S THE TAKE-AWAY?
Whatever the specifics of your WHS role, understanding these three underpinning concerns will absolutely assist your outcomes. It seems to me that there is little to lose and much to gain. Ethical awareness, the determination to wrestle with morality, and emotional responsiveness are all locations of investment, not cost.
As we close, you may have noted that I have not even pointed out an item - and I'm not going to. Today, my product silence is my way of strolling the talk. What I have actually shown you is so foundational it is worthy of an undistracted focus.
