WHS TOPICS WE RARELY SPEAK ABOUT

Work Health and Safety specialists pursue many common objectives and comply with comparable guidelines. Whether you are an entrepreneur, a PCBU, a Site Safety Officer, or part of my Occupational Safety Solutions team, we have particular subjects we typically deal with, as well as things we rarely go over. It's those underlying things that I wish to concentrate on today.

Sad to say, my dad departed 3 weeks back, and beyond the grief and sorrow, his death has me thinking outside the boxes we normally live in. He was a good guy, and I would've liked him to have actually had more time to buy my young boys and myself, but that's not how it played out. He had a long innings, and he batted with tactical songs, significant boundaries and even had actually a few "smacked out of the grounds for 6" moments. Death, and particularly his death, has actually got me believing about much deeper issues.

We reside in complex and very misleading times. In the midst of this, the concerns being put on companies are increasing, not only demanding more of our resources but likewise significantly requiring compliance to structures of believing we and our workers might not always agree with. We're being forced off the well-worn paths, tracks and trails we're used to, and onto side-roads and goat routes and into unsure surface.

Do you as a hectic individual, as I do, battle with managing work, staff, family and good friends? Do you also discover it hard at times to believe beyond the obvious and the fundamentals?

3 METHODS OF EXPLAINING WHS
The WHS function can be explained plainly, considerably or with street-level bluntness:

Stated plainly ... Work Health and Safety has to do with foreseeing what can fail, Strategising to avoid it occurring, and assisting keep people safe.

The majority of individuals run from snakes, however safety professionals act in a different way. WHS requires us to anticipate the snake, keep it in view, know how to react, train others to do also, keep unnecessary snakes out, manage the snakes that are already inside, and plan for the ones that are birthed every day.

Mentioned bluntly ... Work Health and Safety activities have to do with assisting business owners cover their arse, adhere to the law and keep their individuals safe.

But these are the WHS parts that are apparent. Let's talk about 3 subjects that do not get offered much time.

A NUMBER OF WHS ASPECTS WE DON'T TEND TO SPEAK ABOUT
At a surface level, we see requirements, protocols, checks and balances. Beneath these top behaviours, guiding principles are at work, with duty of care and due diligence leading the way. If we look even deeper, we see an extended range of factors, motivations, ideas and viewpoints, of which, there are 3 I wish to touch on:

1. Ethical awareness,
2. Wrestling with morality, and
3. Handling and permitting emotion,

Think about them as path guides to assist you browse when federal government, situations, or your people force you off the well-worn courses that you are used to.

Work Health and Safety INCLUDES ETHICS

You almost definitely already have an operating ethical compass if you've read this far. You might not have actually believed much about its application in the safety context. 'Application' is what ethics has to do with. Ethics is the application of morality in a given scenario. Simply put, morality is a system that tells us what is right and wrong, and ethics is the application of those rights and wrongs in a provided situation. It can be fairly argued that ethics change with time, but morality is constant.

Where does this fit in the WHS context? Ethics resembles a path guide that informs you to pick up the rate, slow down, or step carefully. The virtue or morality is in reaching the destination; ethics is exercised in getting there appropriately.

For example, while a lot of employees believe it is right to talk about unsafe circumstances (morality), however not all do (ethics). Most also understand it is right for them to remedy a supervisor who is directing them to do something harmful (morality), but lots of would not follow through on this conviction (ethics). There is typically a space in between morality and ethics and I have a strong suspicion that gap was narrower in my father's day.

The take-away: do not assume that morality is enough, or that the ethical behaviour seen in one work domain will likewise be evidenced in another. Reliable WHS isn't just about what is right; it's also about creating a workspace where ethical behaviour is the norm. A few of the tips that follow will help.

WHS IS UNAPOLOGETICALLY MORAL

We have actually currently pointed out that morality is the art of understanding the difference in between wrong and best, even when the best thing is less advantageous. It's the ethical equivalent of having 'a personal fact' - and in a work environment safety situation, that is a catastrophe waiting to occur.

Our employees may disagree on how best and wrong is chosen, but employees need to come together when it comes to WHS. It's all right for a worker to understand that their viewpoints and their morality have value, however when it comes to safety decisions, in all but the most exceptional of cases, the ethical thing to do is what the legislation says to do.

But what if a supervisor, a fellow worker or federal government authority acts, needs or manoeuvres in an immoral method? Plainly, there are times when what is legal is likewise unethical; for example, both previously and throughout World War Two the Nazi SS assembled Jewish, Homosexual and polish individuals for damage. They did this within the law. In fact, it could be argued they were compelled by it. However was it ethical?

The take-away for me, and maybe for you, is that something doesn't end up being moral or unethical due to the fact that the law or the crowd says it is. Nowadays, I understand that individual morality varies profoundly from person to person - maybe more than ever in the past. Since I need to battle with the implications of a morally ambiguous truth, that brings a difficulty to my office. Clear communication and decisions will assist - however sticking my head in the sand will not.

Morality gives none people a free pass, and I reckon my father's generation understood that much better than we do.

Work Health and Safety INCLUDES EMOTION
When it comes to emotions, there are two groups (or extremes) that tend to control. These emotions trigger hesitancy and nervousness, leading workers to not speak when they should. These emotions get in the method of efficient communication, shut down open discussion and increase the probability of errors and dangers taking place.

What are we to do? The workplace requires all types of characters, so all these emotions will make an appearance. We require to find a way to handle emotional extremes.

My dad's generation was huge on individual duty and simply "getting shit done". My generation was more interested in self-confidence and understanding ourselves within a team-oriented context. Today's young people appear to believe the world revolves around their wants, their requirements, and their reality.

Maybe there's a winning balance to be found in between, and I reckon sincerity is a great location to start. For instance, a team leader can show the way by prefacing his comments to motivate emotional awareness and self-management. For instance:

"I feel a little anxious raising this, however I'm going to ..."
"Wait! Give me a minute. I'm too f 'n angry and I'm gon na say something we'll both remorse."
"I do not mind if you do 'you' at home. Heck, I do 'me' in the house. But when we're here, we do 'us'! Do you understand that?"

WHAT'S THE TAKE-AWAY?
Whatever the specifics of your Work Health and Safety role, knowing these 3 underpinning issues will absolutely assist your results. It seems to me that there is little to lose and much to acquire. Ethical awareness, the determination to wrestle with morality, and emotional responsiveness are all locations of financial investment, not expenditure.

As we close, you may have noted that I have not even mentioned a product - and I'm not going to. Today, my item silence is my way of walking the talk. What I have actually shown you is so foundational it is worthy of an undistracted focus.
