How To Renew Drivers Licences, Why Dvla Is Taking So Long And Can You Still Drive While Waiting
Your renewal form will be emailed to you 4-6 weeks prior to your licence expiry. Any application to renew a licence that has gone beyond its expiry date will be rejected and the applicant will be considered as a new applicant. In the avoidance of doubt, it is unlawful to driver a licensed vehicle without the appropriate licence and doing so may lead to prosecution. Please submit all required application form and supporting documentation via email, as clear legible scans. This must be submitted at least one month before your current licence expires .
Though the photocard needs to be renewed every 10 years, in general driving licences are valid until you're 70, after which it needs renewing every three years. If you only need to update your address or name, or you're over 70 and you're just renewing it, this is free. There's no limit to the number of times you can update your name and address for free. There's a £14 fee for each renewal if you do it online, £17 if you renew by post.
You can still upgrade your paper licence at any time by applying to exchange it for a photocard. If you do not tell the DVA within eight weeks that your licence has not arrived, you will have to apply for a duplicate licence and pay the relevant fee. If you do not tell the DVA within eight weeks that your licence has not arrived, you must apply for a duplicate licence and pay the relevant fee.
Don’t forget to apply for any categories of vehicle covered on your old licence, if you still want to be able to drive them after you renew your licence. So for example, if your licence expired on 30 December 2020, you have until 30 November 2021 to renew – but it's crucial you don't forget as you could face a heavy fine. This means those whose licences expired last July or August (or this June/July) should be renewing now or very soon. However, if your licence has expired, you shouldn’t drive until the DVLA has received your renewal application. You’ll need to renew your licence earlier than the expiry date if any of your personal details have changed, such as name, gender and address. The '4b' renewal date is generally 10 years after the date the licence was last issued with a new photo.
Drivers could face a five-month wait to get their hands on their renewed licence due to "continuing delays" experienced by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency . The DVLA has issued an urgent warning to every single driver in the UK. Your licence certificate will be sent via email , and once created your badge will be available to collect on a prearrange date.
If your address is wrong, you can update it online viaGov.uk, or by post (see Gov.uk for info). There's no limit to the number of times you can do this for free, so it's handy if you move again later down the line. Always use the officialGov.uklink to make sure you don't get caught out.
Photocard licences replaced paper licences in 1998, and must be renewed every 10 years. The DVLA says a whopping two million or so photocards are out of date. When you receive your new licence, don’t forget to dispose of your expired licence and keep the new one in a safe place. DVLA has received your complete application within the last 12 months. You must meet any conditions specified on your previous licence that still apply.
The DVLA will send you a D46P application form 90 days before your 70th birthday, and then every three years afterwards. If you haven't got the D46P form, you can use a 'D1 application for a driving licence form', which you can pick up from a Post Office. The DVLA will send you a reminder and an application form to renew your licence as your 70th birthday approaches and then every three years afterwards when your licence is due for renewal. Short-term medical driving licences can be renewed by post – the DVLA should send you a reminder letter 90 days before the expiry date with the right forms. Apply early to get your new driving licence before your existing licence expires. Applications where the driver has declared a medical condition may take longer to process.
DVLA leaflet INF5D has details of the main form used in non-problematical cases. In accordance with current regulations, they have to state you can do this for nothing via the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency . In Northern Ireland, DVLA is replaced by the Driver and Vehicle Agency but the process is similar. Before looking at the way you can obtain a new licence when you reach 70, there’s a need to demystify some myths.
"Our online services have not been impacted by the pandemic and continue to run without any delays. The majority of transactions can be done online." But dvla renew driving licence say there is no delay to online applications and advises customers to use its online services “where possible”. There are reports of some motorists waiting up to five months to receive their documents. We advise that you sign up with the DBS update service, information can be found at DBS Update Service website and must be done within 19 days of receiving your Disclosure certificate.
As with address updates, handily there's no limit to the number of times you can update your name for free. The DVLA scrapped the paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence in June 2015, for anyone with a licence issued after 1998 – it now has no legal status and can be safely binned. The DVLA writes to every driver when their photocard driving licence is due for renewal, providing instructions on how to renew and the penalty for not doing so.
Once a licence has lapsed, it cannot technically be renewed and a new application will be required, along with all necessary documentation and fees. A new licence will not be granted until all necessary checks have been carried out. You should wear a face coveringwhen using taxis or private hire vehicles.
