Uk Driving Licence Expiry Dates Extended Amid Coronavirus Crisis
If your licence expired between 1 February and 31 December 2020 then you received an extension for 11 months due to coronavirus. This extension started from the original expiry date on your licence. If renewing driving licence 've developed a medical condition or disability that could affect your driving, you must tell the DVLA, even if you're not yet due to renew your licence. This also applies if your condition has worsened since your licence was issued. Don’t forget to apply for any categories of vehicle covered on your old licence, if you still want to be able to drive them after you renew your licence.
Your driving licence needs to be renewed every 10 years in the UK, unless you’re over the age of 70, in which case you’ll need to renew it every three years. However, if you want to change your photo at the same time, this will cost you £14 online, or £17 by post. The advantage of renewing online is that it is certain that the DVLA has your application and is processing it. Those with licences expiring in August 2021 should be renewing now and the same for those whose licences expired August-September 2020 but had an automatic extension. The DVLA is urging drivers to check their licence expiry date or risk a substantial fine.
Before this, the paper licence was used to record penalty points, but these are now logged electronically. For driving licences that should have run out in November 2020, you'll need to make sure it is up to date by October 2021. So, if your licence was due to expire in October 2020, your time to renew it would be in September 2021. If you have a short-term medical licence, you’ll need to renew it by the expiry date.
