Renew Your Driver Licence
Thousands of drivers are being urged to check when their driving licence expires as a coronavirus extension runs out soon. Advice from the DVLA says you must renew your extended licence before driving abroad. The DVLA licence check service has not been updated to include any extension given to a driving licence - so will only show the original date the licence was to expire.
You have to renew your photocard with a new picture every 10 years to make sure it’s up to date. It's essential to be open and honest with your motor insurer and make sure that they know about any health condition that might affect your driving. You can only drive vehicles you have applied for on your current application – and were entitled to drive on your previous licence. The same applies to drivers whose licences which expired in August-September 2020, but which were automatically extended by 11 months. Applying for a new driving licence, or renewing an existing one, has become a headache for motorists since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
If any of these apply to you, you must get a new photocard licence. Currently, you can only renew a short-term medical licence online if you have diabetes, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, a visual impairment, a sleep condition, or a heart condition. You won't have to retake your test, but you'll have to declare any medical conditions you have and confirm that you meet the eyesight standards. We recommend that you get an eye test before renewing your licence if possible. Not renewing your licence at the right time could also lead to issues with hiring a car or proving your ability to drive to your employer. If you don’t renew your licence when it expires you’re breaking the law and could face a fine of up to £1,000.

In general, to avoid delays, the advice for renewals is to apply online. If your name or title has changed then you will need to apply direct to DVLA online (opens in new window or via a D1 ‘Application for a driving licence’ form by post. There is no need to resit a driving test in order to renew a driving licence at 70.
