The Different Types of Computer Printers
printers Traditionally, computer printers have a paper-based printing capability, which means the information printed out is either a black-and-white, grayscale, or color document. This traditional capability has made it very economical for many home and small office users to use a computer printer simply to make a simple copy of important information or images. At one time, this was all that was available to computer users; today, a wide array of technologically advanced computer printing products have been developed to address new needs and requirements. The two most popular types of printer available today are inkjet and dot matrix.

Inkjet computer printers utilize a cartridge-based system to deliver ink from a print head to a print surface. All ink used in an inkjet printer is monochrome - that is, it is the same color. Unlike dot matrix, inkjet printer cartridges require little maintenance and they are not difficult to replace. However, inkjet printer cartridges are often more expensive than those in dot matrix printer cartridges. In addition, inkjet printer cartridges can sometimes be difficult to install and sometimes cannot be installed by using an adhesive strip or other tools. These factors, combined with the relatively steep learning curve involved in operating a computer printer, have resulted in the relative rarity of this type of computer printer.

Dot matrix printers, which use a pin-based method to deliver color ink to a print surface, are much more widely available. These printers generally include basic features such as multiple color support, if needed, and some type of software that will allow you to manipulate and control colors and shading. Dot matrix printheads are not very difficult to find and often come with software that makes printing easy. These printers offer good quality at a reasonable price, and they do well in home offices or for intensive printing projects where accuracy is not an issue.

Dye sublimation printers use ultraviolet light to fuse dye molecules onto a print surface, which results in incredible print quality. Because of the way dye sublimates, dye-based printer cartridges cause little dust particles to build up on the print head. This dust build-up does not affect the quality of the final print, but it can be visibly annoying if not cleaned properly after printing. Typically, the operator must physically open the unit and clear the dust before beginning a new job. Some of the newer dye sublimation units include self-cleaning mechanisms that automatically cleanse the head when the power is turned on. These units are becoming more popular in home offices because they require less maintenance and they produce much less waste.

Thermal transfer printers use heat-sensitive inks to transfer images from a computer monitor, paper, or photo paper to an inkjet or dot matrix printer. another computer is using the printer All thermal printers are inkjet printers and most do a great job when copying text or doing a great job of copying pictures. The most common use is withfigures, which are graphics that are printed in the same manner that photo images are printed in a photo paper. Typical infiguration images are figurines, icons, maps, or other designs that require a good bit of imagination to create. For this reason, there are no limits on the types of designs that can be printed with a thermal printer.

A dot matrix printer is also known as a monochrome printer, and these are used mainly to print one color, which are usually either black or white. There are some printers that can also print in color, but most people find that printing in color requires a bit of extra care when preparing the inkjet printouts. Most printers will only accept a single dye for a monochrome image, whereas laser printers can accept two or three colors. This is mainly due to the fact that a laser printer toner contains black ink which is more absorbent than the color ink of a dot matrix printer.

Although the process for printing in color and black and white is more complicated, it is generally easier than dot-matrix printing. If you are thinking about switching from a dot-matrix printer to a laser printer, you should always check with your company's management first. Although many employees enjoy the ability to work with a dot-matrix printer, it is generally considered to be more of a time-consuming process. Laser printers are generally used by larger companies that must be set up and maintained daily, and they offer a more professional appearance to any documents that are printed.
