Drivers Licence Renewal
Advice from the DVLA says you must renew your extended licence before driving abroad. If your licence expires after 31 December 2020 you will need to apply to have it renewed as normal. There is currently no automatic extension for licences that expire after 31 December 2020.
The DVLA writes to every driver when their photocard driving licence is due for renewal, providing instructions on how to renew and the penalty for not doing so. Renewing late won't prompt a fine, but if your licence has expired the DVLA says you shouldn't drive until it has received your completed renewal application – see directly below. Though the photocard needs to be renewed every 10 years, in general driving licences are valid until you're 70, after which it needs renewing every three years. If you only need to update your address or name, or you're over 70 and you're just renewing it, this is free. There's no limit to the number of times you can update your name and address for free.
If you’ve got a valid passport and internet access, you can apply online and use the photo that’s on your passport for your new photocard. You must tell the DVLA about medical conditions as they develop and not just when you’re attempting to renew your licence. In 2015, the DVLA scrapped the paper counterpart of the driving licence for anyone with a driving licence issued after 1998. If you are under 70, you must renew your driving licence every ten years. It means photocard licences which expired between February and December 2020 were extended - valid from the date of expiry. The DVLA extended driving licences for 11 months at the height of the pandemic last year amid Covid restrictions.
Some people mistakenly refer to international driving permits as 'international driving licences'. However, there is no such thing as an international driving licence – they are not legally recognised – so don’t be fooled into buying one, as they are not worth the paper they are printed on. The DVA aims to process your licence within 10 working days of receiving a completed application. This may take longer if your health or personal details have to be checked.
If you want to upgrade before then, you can apply to change your paper licence for a photocard, though it'll cost £20 and you'll need to show extra ID – seeGov.ukfor full info. The benefit of renewing online is that you'll get your driving licence much sooner than if you renew by post. This extension will be automatically applied, the driver record will not be updated and renewal licences may not be issued during this period.

The date displayed in section 4a is the date you were issued the photocard licence. Drivers need to attend refresher training every other renewal, which is usually every six years, unless there are reasons why your licences are not issued for the full three years. The refresher training must be completed before your renewal application can be granted.
