Computer printers, also known as a dot matrix, monochrome, or laser printer, makes a hard copy (human-readable text and/or images) of data stored in digital form, typically on non-lossy physical print medium such as thermal paper or plastic transparencies. The original document is first copied by the computer to a non-lossy magnetic media and then is run through the printer, which combines solid ink in the ink jet wheel with a laser light source, to produce the desired image. Currently, there are two basic technologies in print quality: inkjet and laser. The laser printer is often the choice for home users. It is a simple, easy to use, compact machine that consumes little in the way of electrical power.
Dot matrix printers (or simply dot matrix) are large scale, industrial type printers used most often in offices and commercial facilities. It is one of the more popular choices for color printers because it has higher printing speeds and quality than inkjet and monochrome printers. Although, dot matrix is steadily losing ground to cheaper, faster, and more affordable technologies such as dye sublimation, thermal, and UV/UVB color printers. It is still best to find an experienced professional to do color printing for you, although dye-sublimation printers and newer technologies can be purchased for home use.
dot-matrix printers have several advantages over its competitors, but there are some disadvantages as well. These include portability issues that will limit its usage to small office areas, lack of standard cartridges that may run out of ink quickly, poor quality and image appearance, slower speed, and limited color range. Most major manufacturers have stopped making these type of printers.
HP has introduced a new model called Compaq Portable dot matrix printers. It includes an internal rechargeable battery that gives users the ability to use it anywhere in the world. These models are available with full-color or solid color printing capabilities and with either text or graphics support. The main article discusses the pros and cons of using HP Compaq Portable dot matrix printers at home.
computer and printer package Laser vs. Inkjet - The main advantage of laser printers over inkjet printers is that they produce high quality prints that can last for many years. A laser printer works by using a combination of laser and ink that transfers the color image to paper. The main disadvantage of a laser printer is that users need to purchase their own laser toner and ink. It also consumes more power than an inkjet printer.
Thermal vs. Cool / Silicone - Cool and Silicone computer printers use heat-sensitive resistive and conductive media to transfer the ink. Cool and silicone based dot-matrix printers use the latest technologies that are very energy efficient. Cool and silicone based computer printers have a low start up cost less to run than other types of computer printers. These models are also great for low volume print jobs.
Ribbon vs. Thermal - The ribbon printer produces top quality prints that are comparable to inkjet printers and are more cost effective. There are some minor disadvantages with the ribbon printer like when the print head jams, the ribbon will not be as thick. In addition, a ribbon printer uses a certain amount of fluid so will require refilling after continuous use.
Modern printers have more capabilities that older models. These features are not found in dot matrix printers or older laser printers. They are now able to scan, fax, and produce thermal labels. This allows users to create professional business cards and product tags with high-quality results. With the ability to scan bar codes, make direct mail out easy, and produce labels with thermal or dot matrix technology, the future of business printing looks bright. The key is to choose the right type of printer for the job.
