Is it possible to straighten teeth at home?
The simple answer is yes, it's feasible for some people to obtain straighter teeth without wearing braces. The long solution will be... well, something a bit more difficult.

If you've got severely misaligned or crooked teeth, metal braces may be the optimal choice. The dentist will be able to discuss alternatives with you and help determine whether they're appropriate for you.

We spoke with Jody Inouye and Dr. Cameron White, the principal dentist at Bupa and dental hygiene specialists at Bupa Hornsby to get more information about how to straighten your teeth using braces.

Do you have the ability to get your teeth straighter without braces?
Jody states that it's possible to straighten teeth without traditional braces. "There's an option called Invisalign(r), which are clear aligners that are removable."

young braces are very similar to thin, very transparent mouthguards, Dr. White explained. "Those are very effective to straighten your teeth."

Invisalign(r) and the other transparent aligners are created from clear plastic, which is custom-designed to fit onto the teeth. They're replaced with fresh ones every couple of weeks. The teeth are able to move gradually towards the ideal positions over period of time.

Even though this method is more discreet as compared to traditional braces, it's not recommended for everyone. People who have minor problems related to their orthodontics like an overly large or unevenly spaced tooth, or gaps in between, could be suitable candidates for Invisalign(r).

Dental veneers are an alternative to braces and aligners to treat moderate orthodontic problems. These are thin coverings, typically made of composite resin or porcelain, which can be fixed on the front of your teeth in order to alter the appearance the appearance and feel of your teeth. They are generally only for cosmetic purposes and could be unable to provide the benefits as more thorough orthodontic treatment.3

Your dentist could suggest an alternative type of brace, if the situation is more difficult than the ones is available for veneers or aligners. They could include tooth-colored ceramic braces or lingual braces placed behind teeth. Metal braces remain an option, but they can prove very efficient in some situations.

Is there a way to straighten my teeth without getting treatment at home? Is it safe to use "DIY braces?"
YouTube, blogs, and videos have been circulating with instructions on how to straighten the teeth by yourself. But dentists and dental professionals advise against moving your teeth at home in the absence of supervision from an expert could be a danger to your health.

"I've yet to hear about a method that can naturally align your teeth. "And if it was likely, I wouldn't advise it," Dr White says. It is not an easy task. There's always a risk. If you fail to seek help from a professional, it's possible that you cause significant dental damage.

Your dentist or your orthodontist will discuss the potential risks as well as the potential problems that may arise during your consultation. Ask any questions you have and make informed choices regarding the most appropriate treatment option for you.

Is orthodontic treatment possible to enhance your oral health?
Whether you use traditional braces or clear aligners, straightening teeth does not always have to do with appearance. It can be difficult for those with misaligned or crooked teeth to brush and floss, increasing their risk of dental decay and cavities. Tooth with protrusions are in greater danger of injury.6

Jody states that braces may reduce the risk of gum disease in certain people. "They may have a better time cleaning their teeth with straight teeth."

The process of brushing and flossing is more difficult and time-consuming while the braces you're wearing are traditional, but it's important to maintain good oral hygiene through orthodontic treatment, to decrease chances of developing problems and delay your treatment time.4

It is important to keep in mind that veneers typically aren't connected with the same health benefits for health that orthodontic treatment if they're used to correct minor alignment issues.
