It is possible to find a different treatment to fatty liver.xxx It is believed that the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden has discovered a gene pathway in the body that when silenced can be restored to normal immunity for sufferers of this disorder.
This study is presented within Science Translational Medicine. It also features an Italian guide, Valerio Azzimato. Valerio is an investigator in the Department of Medicine as the first author and has worked at Monzino Cardiology Center and the Ifo Regina Elena in Rome.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is where there is an excessive amount of fat within the liver. This happens to people who don't drink much, or even no alcohol. It is common among people who are overweight, or suffer from diabetes. There aren't any treatments that are currently in use. Through this study, scientists discovered that macrophages from the liver (a form of white blood cells that are important for immune function and that are found within the liver) attempt to eliminate excess fat.
They produce excess levels of oxidants. These could cause damage to the liver . It was discovered that an antioxidant protein (called Nrf2) typically protects the body against harmful oxygenants, is not present in the livers of obese patients as well as mice.
Azzimato says, "This lack of Nrf2 protein means that obese people aren't able to respond to the oxidative stress that is caused by fat accumulation in their liver." Researchers also detected an increase in the microRna molecules (miR144) in the livers of the obese.
In response to oxidative stresses in both immune cells as well as the most abundant liver cells, hepatocytes produce large amounts of miR144.
The miR144 molecule influences the Nrf2 gene by decreasing the amount of proteins it produces and resulting in a weaker antioxidant response. Researchers were able to suppress miR144 expression within immune cells.
The liver's oxidation was reduced and the antioxidant response returned to normal.
