The Olive Oil Mystery Revealed
An annual international symposium on olive oil and health held by Yale School of Public Health. Yale School of Public Health will be heading to the middle of the olive oil world in Spain where world-class experts will gather in the coming months to study the potential and impact of what is sometimes referred to as "liquid gold."

It is hosted by Jaen University. University of Jaen, the symposium will run between December 9 and 12 in Jaen, a city in the province of Andalusia located in the middle of Spain's olive oil belt. It is also an area that is being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage site for an olive grove, known as"the Mar de Olivos, or "Sea of Olives." This is the third international symposium hosted since 2018. The previous year's symposium was delayed due to the epidemic.

The event was organized with Vasilis Vasiliou, Ph.D., the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology and the Chair of the Yale School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences, along with Tassos C. Kyriakides, Ph.D. is a Yale Center for Analytical Sciences (biostatistics) faculty participant, the symposium will bring together academics, business leaders farmers, regional and national decision makers to explore the untapped possibilities of olive trees and their fruits, in particular olive oil.

"We're extremely excited to return. This year's event is the largest to date, with an amazing and exciting program. I am extremely happy to be bringing together so many people who are as enthusiastic about olive oil like I am." said Vasiliou. "There's nothing else like this symposium on the planet."

The symposium this year will focus on diverse topics that are central to the cultivation of olives and the future of olive oil, for both human and planet health. They comprise:

Recent studies have revealed improvements in health connected to olive oil.
How climate change is impacting olive trees and how olive farming can positively affect climate.
Successful olive oil marketing and business models.
Every program session will close with a roundtable discussion followed by a Q&A. The symposium will also include the opportunity to taste olive oil and a guided tour of olive groves.

The Yale School of Public Health is planning to establish an institute called the Yale Institute for Olive Sciences and Health The institute will focus on the study of the olive tree, its products , and their derivatives, as well as ways to incorporate the fruit and its products in the nutrition of individuals. The institute would also be focused on global health issues such as sustainability, circular economy models and climate change.

Vasiliou who hails from Greece and is also a major center of olive oil production and a leading consumer, said that a proposal to establish the establishment of an institute for olive oil needs to be completed and reviewed by the this time next year. This institute would function as a global body to coordinate and carry out activities in all aspects related to the olive tree and its products.

There's nothing like this conference anywhere else in the world.

Vasilis Vasiliou
"I have a family that was raised on olive oil and have experienced its benefits in person. Mediterranean diet has been acknowledged for years as the healthiest in the world, and the foundation of it is olive oil." said the doctor. "I am determined to establish the Yale School of Public Health's collective leading position in this vital area."

And, Kyriakides, an olive oil sommelier not only continuously tastes oils from all over the world, he consumes a lot of olive oil every day in his cooking along with his morning additional virgin olive oil drink.

"It is a good choice for me, and it is absolutely delicious and healthfully nutritious," he said. "The Olive oil and the olive tree have connected people for thousands of years; it's our job as health professionals of the public to ensure the benefits that this superfood can effect on the health of humans are shared with those we interact with."

Evidence from the past 50 years suggests that olive oil is beneficial to health and well-being, Kyriakides said. A daily intake in the range of 20 grams olive oil (about two tablespoons) that includes a certain amount of a certain polyphenol (at at least five mg of hydroxytyrosol or its derivatives) carries a health claim that has been approved by the European Food Safety Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, that is related to the protection of blood lipids from an oxidative stress.

Spain who was asked to be the co-host for the symposium this year, is the largest producers of olive oil worldwide with 35% to 40% of its output, Kyriakides said. In addition, numerous advances in the field of olive farming as well as sustainability and environmental health initiatives have come from Spanish practices.

"Now, more than ever, the need for such an internationally focused institute is so apparent in our efforts to create healthier, more environmentally sustainable methods that benefit both human and planetary wellbeing," Kyriakides said.
