The Secret To Olive Oil
A yearly international symposium about olive oil and health organized by the Yale School of Public Health will be heading to the middle of the olive oil world - Spain where world-class experts will gather later this year to examine the potential and impact of what is sometimes referred to as "liquid gold."

It is hosted by Jaen University. University of Jaen, the symposium is scheduled to run between December 9 and 12 in Jaen the city of the region of Andalusia which is the center of Spain's oil-producing belt, and an area that is being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage site for a grove dubbed"the Mar de Olivos, or "Sea of Olives." This is the third international symposium held since 2018. The previous year's symposium was delayed due to the epidemic.

Organised by Vasilis Vasiliou, Ph.D. The Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology and chair of the Yale School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences and Tassos C. patè di olive , Ph.D., a Yale Center for Analytical Sciences (biostatistics) faculty member, the symposium will bring participants from business, academia, farmers and regional and national decision makers to explore the untapped opportunities of the Olive tree as well as its fruits, in particular olive oil.

"We're thrilled to be back. This year's festival is the biggest yet, with an incredible and ambitious program. I am extremely happy to be bringing together so many people who are as obsessed with olive oil as I am," declared Vasiliou. "There's nothing else like this gathering anywhere else in the world."

This year's symposium will address diverse topics that are central to the cultivation of olives and what the next steps for olive oil, both in terms of human and global health. They include:

Recent research has revealed health benefits related to olive oil.
What is the impact of climate change on olive groves and how olive agriculture can positively affect the climate.
A successful olive oil marketing strategy as well as business model.
Each session will end by a discussion round table and an open-ended Q&A. It will include the opportunity to taste olive oil and a guided tour of olive groves.

The Yale School of Public Health is seeking to launch an institute called the Yale Institute for Olive Sciences and Health The institute will be dedicated to the scientific exploration and study of the Olive tree as well as its products and their derivatives, as well as ways to incorporate the fruit and its products into the diet of people. The institute would also be focused on planetary health issues, including circular economy models, sustainability as well as climate changes.

Vasiliou, who is from Greece, also one of the major centers for olive oil production as well as a major consumer, stated that a proposal for the establishment of an institute for olive oil needs to be completed and reviewed by the this time next year. The institute could serve as a global body to coordinate and carry out activities in all aspects related to the olive tree and its products.

There's nothing else like this event anywhere in the world.

Vasilis Vasiliou
"I have a family that was raised on olive oil, and have witnessed its benefits in person. Mediterranean nutrition has been recognized over the years as being among the most healthy anywhere in the world and its main ingredient is olive oil," he said. "I am determined to establish Yale's School of Public Health's collaboration leadership in this crucial subject."

And, Kyriakides, an olive oil sommelier, not just continuously tastes oils from all over the world, but also takes in large quantities of olive oil daily for his cooking, along with his breakfast Extra virgin olive oil shots.

"It works for me, and it is absolutely healthy and delicious," he said. "The Olive oil and the olive tree have connected with people over the years. it's our job as health professionals of the public to ensure that the benefits this superfood can effect on the health of humans are passed on to those we connect with."

The research of the past 50 years strongly suggests that olive oil is beneficial to healthy health, Kyriakides said. A daily intake of 20 grams of olive oil (about two tablespoons) which contains a specific amount of a specific polyphenol (at at least five mg of hydroxytyrosol or its derivatives) carries a health claim that has been approved by the European Food Safety Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which pertains to protecting blood cholesterol from the effects of oxidative stress.

Spain, which asked to host the co-host for this year's symposium, is the biggest producers of olive oil in the world with 35% - 40% of its production, Kyriakides said. Furthermore, many of the innovations in the olive agricultural and sustainability and planetary health initiatives have come out of Spanish practices.

"Now more than ever before, the need for such an international-focused institute is evident in our efforts toward building more sustainable practices that benefit both human and planetary wellbeing," Kyriakides said.

The relation between olive oil consumption and risk of stroke has been investigated in depth.

A comprehensive review of studies on 841,000 people revealed it was olive oil's only monounsaturated fat source which is linked to a decreased risk of having a stroke or heart diseases ( 14Trusted Source).

In another study that included 140,000 participants, those who ate olive oil were significantly less at risk of having a stroke than those who didn't ( 15Trusted Source).
