Here are the 4 scariest plumbing problems you could ever encounter!
We write about plumbing in the Halloween season. We can only conclude that this means it's time for some plumbing horror stories.

These are a little closer to home. There are four plumbing problems you don't want to experience. Yes, Candu Plumbing & Rooter that just happened 100 years ago; they can happen today.

A legend of fatbergs
In fatberg, fat, oil, and grease (or FOG) are mixed together. It becomes solid when people flush FOG down their drains. Solid FOG sticks to pipe walls or clogs the pipe instead of moving through it. Apparently, the longer the FOG remains in the pipe, the more solidified and congealed it becomes.

The size of a fatberg is almost limitless. Their sewer had a 100 foot fatberg last month. Are you aware of the 820 foot long, 130 ton fatberg engineers removed from sewers under Whitechapel, London? It is because of fatbergs that we say you shouldn't pour FOG down your drains.

Snakes in toilets
It's a different kind of plumbing snake
It's true that snakes can crawl through pipes and enter houses through toilets. snake bites on people sitting on toilets have been recorded (warning: this link is disturbing). Know, however, that this is highly unlikely to happen before you destroy all your toilets. Slithering snakes enter toilets by crawling up the sewer pipes. Typically, they do not enter sewer lines very often, and when they do, they rarely survive.

Snakes enter sewer pipes in several ways. Air vents are possible entry points, or they may be chased into storm drains or damaged pipes by prey.


Sinkholes
Sinkholes develop when natural depressions in the earth do not have external drainage. A lack of adequate drainage impairs the ability of soil moisture to drain away and redistribute effectively. As a result, the water collects, dissolving the structures backing up the ground. Eventually, the groundwater hollows out the earth completely, creating hollow caverns under the dirt. Without support, the surface collapses and anything on it falls down into the hole.

Sinkholes typically occur in places where the rock below the soil surface is soluble and easily dissolved. Sinkholes are sometimes caused by accidents, weather disasters, and even serious plumbing problems. A leak in a pipe could lead to the ground surrounding the pipe to soften and eventually form a sinkhole.

Water is heated and stored inside large, cylindrical metal tanks in conventional water heaters. Using an electric heater, this tank heats the water it holds.

In most water heaters, there is a countermeasure to prevent buildup of pressure. Unless these countermeasures are successful or sediment impedes the heater's normal operation, dangerously excessive pressure will only develop. Maintaining your water heater regularly can protect you from both of these scary scenarios.


Though we hate to break our spooky spell, we feel obliged to share some good news. Each of these admittedly terrifying troubles can be prevented. As long as you maintain your plumbing properly, you can survive anything your home throws at you.
