On June 25, 1950, 75,000 men from the North Korean People's Army crossed the 38th parallel, the border between the Soviet-backed Democratic People's Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south, to start the Korean War. Even now, the Korean peninsula is split.
Under the auspices of the United Nations, the conflict paired South Korea and the United States against North Korea and China. Other countries also provided troops, although the majority of the fighting was done by American forces. Professor Cumings claims that the South Korean Army "essentially crumbled" at the outset of the war.
Truman was enraged by MacArthur's attempt to define and sway US policy. Truman warned MacArthur not to say anything again about striking China's supply bases in public.
The Korean War had a particularly severe impact on the civilian population. During the three years of conflict, between three and four million Korean civilians died, were wounded, or went missing (1950-1953). The war was terrible for Korea as a whole, eliminating the majority of the country's industries.
