Dishwasher Soap - What to Do When Someone Puts It in It
In general, there's only one major difference between dish soap and dishwashing detergent. Suds are not created by dishwashing detergent, but by dish soap. It might be funny to imagine a dishwasher overflowing with bubbles. Sadly, it is not so much funny in reality as it is a big, messy problem. Even if it only happens once, it is a headache. If this occurs repeatedly, soap scum can accumulate. If left unattended, it could permanently damage your dishwasher.

Even if a soap avalanche is the worse that could happen, don't worry. We will walk you through cleaning up the mess at home. You should always call in the pros if you feel uncomfortable working on an at-home plumbing project.

Shut off the machine.
First and foremost, stop the dishwasher immediately. Stop the wash cycle. Your suds may not have overflowed yet, if you're lucky. It's better to turn the dishwasher off as soon as possible to keep the suds out.

Immediately after you cancel a cycle, your dishwasher should start draining. While it won't clear out everything, it will reduce the amount of water needed for cleaning.

To clean up any overflow, get the right materials.
In the event you weren't able to stop the cycle in time, you'll have some cleanup to do. Cleaning up should be done immediately! If you let water sit, it will seep into your cabinetry or flooring. You will also need a wet mop to clean up the overflow. Because the mixture is a water and soap mixture, wiping it up with dry towels can leave residue behind.

Put the dishes away.
There's more sopping up to do before you clean out pipes and drains. Upon completing the initial draining, open the dishwasher. All the dishes still in the dishwasher need to be moved into the sink.


Remove any scummy residue that may have stuck to the dishes due to an overflow by rinsing them in the sink. Take canduplumbing.com to wash the dishes by hand, while your dishwasher is recovering. If not, just rinse them off and leave them in the sink. If you're done cleaning, just throw the dirty dishes in the washer one more time.

Put the dishwasher away after clearing it out.
It is labor-intensive. You'll have to thoroughly clean and dry all of the inside of your dishwasher. You will continue having problems with suds and soap scum until it is removed completely. In a small bowl, fill up clean water again and again, rinsing away bubbles.

Make sure to keep rinsing until you see no bubbles when you pour the water inside and down the side of the appliance. Wipe down the floor and dry out any remaining water after rinsing. To accomplish this step, you'll likely have to remove the drawers.

Turn on the rinse cycle and let it run for a few minutes.
It does not have to be a full cycle. The rinse cycle should last three to five minutes. We'll be able to tell you if there are any suds left.
