Real Madrid President Perez: Football Matches Must Be Shortened
The fact that I am the referee for the final is not only an honour for me, but also for the Hellenic Football Federation, my family and to all the people who support me in every step of my refereeing career. What has it been like to be part of the refereeing team at this competition? It has been an excellent experience. I met people from 15 different countries and I learned a lot from my colleagues. We really had a very good team in this tournament and it is a privilege that I have had the chance to cooperate with them. What are your aspirations as a referee? My ambition is to take part in major tournaments and competitions such as the Champions League and the European finals. Who are your heroes, both footballing and refereeing? I admire skillful football players with the best sporting behaviour and respect for the game. My refereeing model is a former elite referee and now member of UEFA's Referees' Committee, Kyros Vassaras, who has taken charge of many important competitions such as the Champions League, World Cup, Euro and Olympic Games.
LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool are still firmly in contention for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals despite their dour 0-0 draw against Bayern Munich at home on Tuesday. Klopp's side were frustrated by a disciplined Bayern display in the first leg of the last-16 tie at Anfield. Bundesliga champions Bayern have lost only two of their last 26 home Champions League games, winning 22 of those. But Liverpool boss Klopp is convinced his side have nothing to fear in Germany. It was a big fight. We had the bigger chances. It's not a dream result but it is a good one. It was not a day when we clicked in the first minute. We made our lives more difficult with the last pass today. We had our moments but in these moments we have to score. When Bayern are in trouble, they get really serious like this. That was how it was.
It will be very tight, no doubt. The quality of Tottenham and us is pretty similar.The difference between us in the league was consistency. We played against them, so we know its difficult, Tottenham know its difficult. This is Jurgen Klopp’s third major European final with Liverpool - only Bob Paisley (four) has ever reached more with the club. Jean Makoun scored early in the second half to give Lyon a hard fought 1-0 victory in the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League matchup against Real Madrid. The Spanish champions lost for the third straight time on Lyon’s Stade Gerland home field and will now have an uphill battle when the teams meet at Bernabeu to advance to the next round. With the Champions League final slated to be held in their stadium, an exit this early in the competition would be nothing short of an embarrassment for Real Madrid. They’ll need a multigoal victory to assure themselves of advancing to the next round. Lyon controlled the play in the first half and held a decisive possession advantage. Unfortunately, they didn’t get many accurate scoring chances with a number of them going wide or high of the net. Despite Lyon’s time of possession advantage in the first half, Madrid actually got the best scoring chances in the first half.
DORTMUND, Germany (AFP) - Harry Kane fired Tottenham Hotspur into the Champions League quarter-finals as his winning goal at Borussia Dortmund in Tuesday's (March 5) return leg sealed a 1-0 victory to wrap up a 4-0 aggregate success. On Monday, Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino had demanded they "finish the job" after beating the Bundesliga leaders 3-0 in the first leg at Wembley. His Spurs side delivered, soaking up everything Dortmund threw at them in a one-sided first half before Kane's goal just after the break killed off the hosts' spirited challenge. Kane, who singled out Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for praise after a string of key saves. This is the first time Tottenham are in the last eight of the Champions League since 2010/11 when they bowed out 5-0 on aggregate to Real Madrid. Needing to score at least three goals, Dortmund packed their line-up with forwards as Mario Goetze, Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer - who have scored 30 goals between them - all started together for the first time this season.
