Himalayan Salt - A Global Industry
Himalayan salt is rock salt extracted from the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal and Tibet. This salt is extremely high in magnesium and other trace minerals and is used for many applications. It is often used as food seasoning, as an alternative to regular table salt, for spa treatment and even as a light colored gemstone. All forms of Himalayan salt are processed to achieve the desired mineral properties with varying levels of demand throughout the world.

Himalayan salt consists mainly of sodium chloride and the common salt known as table salt. It has been said that salt was chosen by the ancient Indians because its color was closer to the rainbow. Since ancient times, Himalayan salt has been mined and traded to satisfy the mineral and artistic needs of the people. Today, Himalayan crystal salt is still popular and is considered one of the finest salts available. It is often used in cosmetics, photography, electronics, medicine, dry-cleaning and several other applications.

Himalayan salt comes from Himalayan Mountains and was first identified in the 17th century by Sir Richard Branson who was looking for a replacement for table salt. In 184, he began using it in his cookery, traveling and camping expeditions and eventually introduced it to the world. The salt is obtained by extraction from the deposits that contain rich veins of sulfur and calcium. Branson discovered that small amounts of these minerals held no difference when added to water, so he distributed the small amounts of them to various salt lamp makers in order to use them for his cookery and other uses.

The magnesium content of this stone holds the key to its great taste and it has a pink color which changes depending on where it is found. The calcium content is also important for preserving food since it contains trace amounts of calcium carbonate, phosphate and potassium. These trace amounts are needed by our bodies for proper functioning and an imbalance in the levels can cause various illnesses, according to scientists.

Himalayan Salt contains around 0.3% of Iodine and as the name suggests, this mineral is essential for human beings because it helps maintain proper thyroid function and proper levels of the thyroid hormone in the body. When thyroid function is affected due to an iodine deficiency, the immune system is affected and the person becomes prone to various illnesses including cancer. It is believed that Himalayan Salt contains around ten to twenty percent of iodine which is why it is very popular for those suffering from iodine deficiency. It also helps to regulate the release of the thyroid hormone and prevent the occurrence of hypothyroidism.

The most popular variety of himalayan salt mined in Pakistan is the Kaira-Khand, Akbar's, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu and Lahaul-Khand. These varieties are all high in iodine and minerals like Selenium, Chromium, Iron, Calcium, Sodium and Potassium. There are even studies being carried out in different countries on the effects of the different varieties of Himalayan Salt on the various diseases. However, it is not known whether any correlation between the two have been observed or not.

One of the largest known himalayan salt mines in Pakistan is the Kundalpa Himalayan Salt Mine located near the town of Lahaul in KP. This mine has been mined since 1930 and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994. This mine is the biggest commercial producer of mezzanine stone tiles and other mezzanine products. In addition to this, there are also other salt deposits in the region and a number of companies have laid large scale mining projects in the region. Some of the other projects include the construction of a rail connection from Islamabad to Multan, a mega industrial complex in Karachi, and the revival of the Bhakra-Kahnipura hydroelectric project which will connect Swatnar and Barmer in KP.

In fact, the popular Punjabi television show, Dooj, has been a big hit among people in the country, not only in Punjab but also in other parts of the country. The show has featured celebrities from all over India and has gained popularity in Pakistan as well. The popularity of the show has not only earned the trust and praise of the common masses but has also helped the country's small businesses in tapping the huge resource of mezzanine salt and other minerals available in the state.
