Himalayan salt is naturally white salt mined from deposits in the Himalayan region of northern Pakistan. The naturally pink salt, which sometimes has a milky white tint due to iron deposits, is mainly used for food seasoning and as a substitute for commercial table salt; however, it is also employed for cooking, food presentation and spa treatment. It is one of the most expensive natural ingredients on the market.
Himalayan Crystal Salt is mined mostly from seven places in northern Pakistan and India: the Kufri, Chashmash, Pakistani Sarpul, Akhagar, Lahaul, and Margalla valleys. The salt mine at Chashmash was discovered in 1966 by an Italian mineral engineer who named it after a local shepherd who made him carry out the first survey there. He was astonished when he found rich veins of this crystal-enhanced salt flowing in the snowcapped mountains. Since then, many mining companies have been brought into operation in the area to continue this mining work, but unfortunately, the price of Himalayan Crystal Salt has since gone down considerably because of competitive production in the market.
Despite the unfortunate decline in prices, Himalayan Crystal Salt is still a highly sought-after ingredient in many food preparations throughout the world. It is used both for its aesthetic and medicinal properties and for its deodorizing and cleansing abilities. The salt can be used for oven cooking, roasting, curing, pickling, smoking, and even for flavoring sweets and desserts. Many people believe that it helps keep them fresh and cool during travel, while others say that its deodorizing abilities are enough to justify its high cost.
As the demand for this salt has increased, so has the mining activity in the country. Many countries in the world have become increasingly dependent on imported goods from countries such as Pakistan and India. Although Pakistan and India are known for their natural resources, other countries have begun to take advantage of the abundance of minerals in the deep Himalayas. This has caused many problems for countries which depend on imports of this kind, as they have limited mineral resources themselves. In order to counter this problem, many countries have invested significantly in mining the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains.
There are two main types of minerals which can be found in the Himalayan Salt Deposit. The first type consists of calcium and magnesium, while the other contains iron. These minerals can be separated by various methods, depending on the thickness of the crystals. For instance, alkaline method separates the calcium and magnesium minerals, while cold method separates the iron content. Crystals which have undergone this process are called Himalayan Salt Crystal.
Although the production of Himalayan Sea Salt is illegal in Pakistan, it is a very popular sport in the Punjab. The best place where you can find this sport is in the Karamana hills of Fauji, Himachal Pradesh. It is possible to find a large number of salt pits in the hills here, as the mountains here are covered with thick vegetation. Due to this thick cover, mineral laden air is unable to enter inside the pit, which makes it easier for these crystals to escape.
However, there is a negative aspect associated with the mining of Himalayan Salt in the Punjab and the Himalayan Salt Crystal is no exception. The inhospitable environment here forces inhabitants to build settlements further away from the mine area, which results in pollution. In addition, the poor economic condition of the Punjab makes it impossible for people to pay the required fees to access the mines. Many areas in the Punjab and the Himalayan Salt Crystal have already been completely mined, and unless the people manage to safeguard the deposits, they will be completely exhausted.
However, the biggest threat to the future of the Himalayan Salt Crystal is environmental degradation. If at all some regulations regarding mining and environmental awareness are made, then the damage done so far will only increase. Since the demand for halite exceeds the supply, it is important that we, as consumers, do our bit in order to prevent this from happening.
