Three Ways You Can Malding Like Oprah
few weeks ago they asked I write an article on a painting by Hopper as well as one of the Nighthawks and I, being an experienced researcher, was able to find out. It is well-known or at the very least, learned from experience, that in order to appreciate a painting one needs to know its history and the painter, and most importantly the context in the which it was painted. It is surely something universal, transversal to both space and time which makes it accessible even after centuries. The meanings are subject to change as the world and society change and what used to be clearly seen, perhaps decades ago, is now as obvious. What was unthinkable before now could be revealing our work in a completely different way.

Re-defining a work over time
This is similar to what I imagine happens when you see the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks" that was shut at the bar late in the late at night, with that window that resembles a fish tank, in the location of the characters that are that are observed.

I think that in this work, Hopper would have wanted to provide space for the viewer to allow him to look at the silent, detailed and calm scene given to us by the dark night.

The space, designed for an active viewer, is perhaps the keystone, which allows the painting to be reinterpreted throughout time and, consequently, to be timeless, immortal and even modern.

The painting, made in 1942, isn't immediately linked to a specific time period However, it is believed that its dating is changeable with the change of the viewer, according to the exact time at the period in which the work is viewed.

I believe this is the key to reading, the space that is occupied by the observer that Hopper was hoping to create.

I'll explain.

In my research for information and news about Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able to observe how many describe it , highlighting the following elements:

"[...] the loneliness, the sense of being empty in a world whose shimmering patina is beginning to fade. [...] The uniquely commercial character of the myths is that they peel off their masks and show the world as a blurred reality, with no valid points of reference in the face of uncertainty and a lack of morality. "

The night and the transformation
I am of the opinion that this interpretation is a little ambiguous and, therefore, it's a interpretation provided in the context of society as well as by the dating that is attributed to the work of it was the United States between the 40s and 50s during the boom in economics which redefined the cultural and social assets that were a part of the life of people, a society that is even a little bourgeois, where nightclubs are viewed as places of isolation and despair, as well as a sense of emptiness.

It's a little true, but somewhat not.

When I first came across this painting, and without having studied, it gave me a lot of happiness and peace with its bright contrast and its nocturnal stillness.

Perhaps, as a resident of the midst of a huge, noisy and bustling city, nighttime is one of the moments where I can enjoy the city more calmly with fewer people in the area and fewer vehicles as well as less noise. There are also more space between the streets to choose, and where to stay , under the city's starless sky. Night has a completely different meaning to me than the people who drank in bars across the United States during the 40s When the sun sets down the city changes its appearance and the streets are more open and easy.

We cannot ignore how society has evolved over the course of more than half a century of social and cultural changes. This is the case in between Pop and Rock culture, between the popular psychedelic scene and the 2000s.

As a girl of the 90s, was also a night-time kid, and by growing up I'm referring to all the "formative" experiences that the night brought me. For me it is always common to be out in the evening, often walking around the neighborhood, and on Saturdays looking for the best party, dancing until the early hours while riding a motorbike, or car to locate the last bar open to get the hot pizza or croissant or hot pizza, and then where to sip the last glass and smoke the last puff before dawn came. From the 80s and to the present, nightlife stopped frightening those who stayed at home (let's keep in mind the jazz movement, anti-prohibitionism and even the notorious Cursed Poets who were all great evening owls) and it has become the cradle where many personalities of society find the peace and comfort of other nighthawks.

Hopper's contemporary realist style
Nowadays Hopper's painting reminds me of numerous scenes from modern life. It makes me almost happy and, in all likelihood, sympathize with the three main characters who engage in with the bartender as he clears the bar in order to conclude the bar and begin a new. People who are nocturnal seek peace in the quiet of the nocturnal company, contemplate their lives, watching them through a glass and gather as a tribe of the night, accepting all and not judging anyone. It's not a coincidence that in the most ancient civilisations, such as the Indian one, the half hour before dawn is known as Brahmamuhurta or the time of Brahma which is the ideal time to devote yourself to prayer, meditation as well as study and reflection. This is the time of day when the energy is more intense as well as intense but with an ethereal, spiritual focus.

malding don't see any solitude or empty space in Hopper's painting. I found more among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters. This is because even the right-thinking citizens began going out at night.

In other words, the oldest and most popular areas had to be turned into marketplaces for consumers as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square were required to arrange their groups in line waiting to get their turn; and the music of the drums that played on the side of the street was drowned out by police sirens. It is a worry for me now because the night is shattered by its mystical, timeless ambience, by its being an occasion of aggregation for individuals, and by becoming an unintentional and productive element of the system, demanding clarity and respectability even in the most secluded corners of the city.
