Malding Like Crazy: Lessons From The Mega Stars
a few weeks ago, they asked me to write an article about the work of Hopper and one of the Nighthawks and I, being an experienced researcher, was able to learn more. Since it is generally known or at the least learned from experience, that to comprehend a painting one must know its history, the author and most importantly the context within which he painted it. It is surely something universal, transversal to both space and time and therefore readable after hundreds of years. The meanings alter, as does the way the world and society change and what used to be seen clearly, possibly several years later, is no longer evident. What was unthinkable before is now revealing our work in a completely different way.

Re-defining a piece of work in the course of time
This is a bit like what I imagine happens when you see Hopper's " Nighthawks" which was closed by the bar at evening, and in the window wich looks like the inside of a fish tank, in the location of the characters that are that are observed.

I believe that , in this work, Hopper would have wanted to provide space to the viewer, inviting him to observe the silent, detailed and calm scene that we are presented by the darkness.

This particular space, created for an active audience may be the most important element that allows the artwork to change throughout time and, consequently, to be timeless, immortal, modern, even very contemporary.

The painting, made in 1942, isn't immediately attributable to a precise time period however it appears that the date of its creation can change with the change of the viewers, based on the exact time at which the piece is seen.

I believe this is the most important aspect of reading, the time and space occupied to the reader Hopper was hoping to create.

I'll explain.

Researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able be aware of how many people have described it , highlighting the following elements:

"[...] the feeling of emptiness of a world whose shimmering patina is beginning to fade. [...] The distinctively commercial element of the myths is that they peel off their masks and reveal the world as a blurred reality, with no any valid reference points , immobilized by uncertainty and lack of conscience. "

The night and the transformation

I believe this interpretation is a little ambiguous which means that it is an interpretation given from the socio-cultural context and by the date that is attributed to the work: the United States between the 40s and 50s during the period of economic growth that was redefining the social and cultural values in the lives of individuals, a society that is even a bit bourgeois where nightclubs are viewed as places of loneliness or despair.

It's a little true, but somewhat not.

The first time I saw the painting without having studied it, it gave me a lot of joy and peace, with its bright contrast and quiet nocturnal quality.

Perhaps, as a resident of a large busy and noisy city, night is one of the moments that I am able to enjoy the city more calmly there are fewer people more cars as well as less noise. There are also more spaces between the streets to make the most of, and which place to rest under the night sky that is starless. Night has a completely different meaning for me than the people who drank in bars across the United States during the 40s as the sun's path down and the city is transformed into its appearance, and the streets are more open and easy.

It is impossible to ignore the way society has changed through more than a half century of social and cultural changes, between Pop and Rock culture, and between the popular psychedelic scene and the 2000s.

As a girl of the 90s, grew up also at night and by that I mean every one of the "formative" experiences that the night gave me. For me , it's normal to go out after dark usually walking around the neighborhood, and on Saturdays , looking for the perfect party, dancing until dawn and riding around on a motorbike or driving around in search of the last bar that is open to grab the bread or hot pizza or hot pizza, and then where to sip the last glass and light the last cigarette before sunrise was set. From the 80s and onwards, the night stopped in a way that scared those who stayed the house (let's not forget the jazz movement, anti-prohibitionism and even the Cursed Poets all of them perfect evening owls) and has since become the cradle where many personalities of society find the peace and comfort of other night hawks.

Hopper's contemporary realist style
The painting of Hopper today reminds me of numerous scenes from day life. malding make me feel happy and, in all likelihood, sympathize with the three main characters, who have with the bartender as he is cleaning the bar to end the day and then open another. The nocturnes want to rest in the silence of the nocturnal company, reflect on their lives by watching them through a glass . They meet as a tribe in the night, welcoming everyone , and never judging anyone. It's no accident that in the most ancient primitive civilizations like the Indian one, the time between midnight and dawn is known as Brahmamuhurta or the time of Brahma which is the ideal time to devote oneself to meditation, prayer studying, and contemplation. In this space of time the energy is more intense and intense, but they are of a calm, spiritual intensity.

There is no solitude nor empty space in Hopper's painting. I found more among the gentrified streets of the night quarters, as even the right-thinking folks started going out at night.

In other words, the oldest and most popular areas were transformed into marketplaces for consumers as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square were required to arrange their groups in line, waiting for their turn while the sound of the drums that played on the side of the street was slowed by the police sirens. That scares me today that nighttime is desnatured by its sacred timeless atmosphere, by its being an opportunity for aggregation of individuals, and by becoming an unintentional and productive element of the system, demanding clarity and respectability even in the most secluded corners within the cities.
