few weeks ago they asked me to write an article about one of the paintings by Hopper, the Nighthawks and I, as a good researcher, went to find out. It is well-known or at the very least, learn by experience, that in order to appreciate a painting it is necessary to know the history of the painting and the painter, and most importantly the context within which he painted it. Art is certainly an universal thing, that transcends time and space, which makes it accessible even over the course of hundreds of years. What was not considered before now could be revealing the work to us in a totally different manner.

Re-defining a work over time
This is a bit like what I think happens when you see Hopper's " Nighthawks" which was closed by the bar late in the late at night, with that window wich looks like a fish tank, in the location of the characters that are that are observed.

I think that in the painting Hopper would have wanted to provide space to the viewer, inviting viewers to take in the quiet, detailed and calm scene presented to us by the night.

what is malding , designed for an active audience may be the most important element that allows the work to be reinterpreted in the course of time, and to remain timeless, indestructible contemporary, and contemporary.

The work, created in 1942, cannot be immediately attributable to an exact time period, but it seems that its date can be altered with the change of the viewer, according to the time in which the piece is seen.

Night and transformation
I am of the opinion that this interpretation is partial and, therefore, it's an interpretation influenced in the context of society as well as by the dates associated with the work: The United States between the 40s and 50s, in the economic boom that was redefining the social and cultural values in the life of people, a society that is even a bit bourgeois in which nightclubs are seen as places of solitude, despair and existential emptiness.

This is somewhat true and it's not the whole truth.

When I first saw this painting, without having studied it, it gave me lots of happiness and peace with its vibrant contrast and nocturnal stillness.

If I'm from the midst of a huge, noisy and bustling city, nighttime is one of those times where I can enjoy the city more calmly: fewer people around more cars, less noise, more space between the streets to make the most of, and which place to rest under the starless urban sky. The night has a very different meaning to me than those who went to bars in The United States during the 40s: when the sun goes down, the city transforms its appearance, and the streets are more open and easy.

We must not forget how society has evolved through more than a half century of social and cultural shifts, between Pop as well as Rock culture, between psychedelic movement as well as the decade 2000.

As a girl of the 90s, have also grown up at night and by "growing up" I am referring to every one of the "formative" experiences that the night gave me. I don't see any solitude or emptiness in Hopper's painting; I also found it among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters, as even the right-thinking citizens began drinking in the evening.

In other words, the oldest and most popular areas had to be turned into showcases for the consumer; and the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square had to rearrange themselves into lines, waiting for their turn to be seated; and the beat of the drums on the the street was drowned out by the police sirens. It is a worry for me now because the night is shattered by its sacred , timeless atmosphere, by its being an occasion of aggregation for the lone wolves, and is now an additional uncovering tool of the system, demanding transparency and respectability in the darkest parts in the city.
