Malding Better Than Guy Kawasaki Himself
A few weeks ago, they requested me to write an article on a painting by Hopper and one of the Nighthawks, and I, as a good researcher, went to learn more. Because it is known or at the very least, learned from experience, that to comprehend a painting one must know its history and the painter, and most importantly the context within the which it was painted. Art is definitely something universal, transversal to the space and time, which makes it accessible even over the course of hundreds of years. However, the interpretations change, along with how society and the world evolve and what was once able to be clearly seen, perhaps decades after, is not evident. What was unthinkable before now could be revealing the process to us in a different manner.

Re-defining a work over time
It's a little like the scene I see when you view the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks" which was closed by the bar late in the evening, and in the window that resembles an aquarium, from the same position as the characters he who were observed.

I believe that in this painting, Hopper would have wanted to provide space for the viewer to allow him to observe the silent, detailed and calm scene presented to us by the dark night.

The space, designed for an active audience could be the keystone, which allows the painting to be changed in the course of time, and to remain timeless, indestructible, modern, even very contemporary.

The work, created in 1942, isn't immediately attributable to an exact date However, it is believed that its date can be altered according to the changes in the viewer, according to the time in the period in which the work is viewed.

My opinion is that this is the key to reading, the space that is occupied to the reader Hopper was hoping to create.

I'll explain.

In my research for information and news about Hopper's " Nighthawks", I was able to see how people describe it , highlighting the following elements:

"[...] the solitude, the feeling of emptiness of a world whose shimmering patina begins to give way [...] The uniquely commercial character, the false myths take off their masks and reveal the world as a blurred reality, with no reliable sources of reference Isolated by doubt and unconscience. "

The night and the transformation
I think this interpretation is partial, that is, it's an interpretation influenced from the socio-cultural context and by the dates attributed to the work of The United States between the 40s and 50s, during the economic boom that was redefining the social and cultural assets in the life of people, a society that is even a bit bourgeois, where nightclubs are viewed as places of loneliness, despair and existential emptiness.

It's true in a certain degree, and somewhat not.

First time that I saw the painting without having studied, it gave me happiness and peace with its vibrant contrast and nocturnal stillness.

Perhaps, as a resident of an extremely noisy and crowded metropolis, the night is one of the times when I can experience the city more calmly: fewer people around, fewer cars and less noise, more spaces between the streets to appropriate, where to stay , under the night sky that is starless. The night has a very different meaning to me than those who frequented bars in The United States during the 40s: when the sun goes down, the city transforms its appearance and the streets are more open and simple.

We cannot ignore how society has evolved through more than a half century of cultural and social changes. This is the case that occurred between Pop as well as Rock culture, between the popular psychedelic scene in the 1990s and 2000s.

Personally, as a child of the 90s, I was also a night-time kid and by that I'm referring to every one of the "formative" experiences that the night gave me. For me it is always normal to go out at night, often walking through the streets, and on Saturdays looking for the best nightclub, dancing till dawn, riding a motorbike or driving around in search of the last bar that is open to grab the bread or hot pizza, where to drink the last glass and light the last puff before dawn arrived. From the 80s and onwards, the night stopped in a way that scared those who stayed their homes (let's keep in mind the jazz movement, anti-prohibitionism and the Cursed Poets who were all great night owls) and it became the cradle where many personalities of society find the peace and comfort of other nighthawks.

Hopper's modern realism
The painting of Hopper today reminds me of numerous scenes from day life. malding makes me almost happy and, in all likelihood, compassionate, especially with the last three characters who engage in with the bartender as he clears the bar in order to conclude the bar and begin a new. bald twitch emote who are nocturnal seek peace in the silence of their nightly companions. They reflect on their lives by watching them through a glass and form a group of the night, welcoming everyone , and never judging anyone. It is no coincidence that in the oldest civilisations, such as the Indian one, the half hour before dawn is known as Brahmamuhurta, or time of Brahma the most ideal time to dedicate oneself to prayer, meditation, study and introspection. In this time, the energy levels are higher, intense but of tranquil, spiritual intensity.

I see no solitude or empty space in Hopper's painting. I found more among the gentrified streets of the night quarters, as even the right-thinking folks started drinking in the evening.

In other words, the oldest and most popular neighborhoods had to be transformed into marketplaces for consumers; and the spontaneous aggregations of people who gathered in the square had to rearrange themselves into lines waiting to be seated to be seated; and the beat of the drums that played on the side of the street was slowed by police sirens. That scares me today because the night is shattered by its sacred , timeless atmosphere and by the fact that it is an opportunity for aggregation of the lone wolves, and is now another uncover productive gear of the system, demanding transparency and respectability in the darkest parts within the cities.
