a few weeks ago, they asked for me to compose an essay on one of the paintings by Hopper as well as one of the Nighthawks and I, being an experienced researcher, was able to find out. Because it is known or at the least learned from experience, that to comprehend a painting it is necessary to know the history of the painting, the author and, most importantly, the context in the which it was painted. Art is certainly something universal, transcendent to the space and time, which makes it accessible even after hundreds of years. The meanings are subject to change as the world and society change and what was once able to be clearly seen, perhaps several years after, is not so obvious. What was not considered before now could be revealing the work to us in a different manner.
Re-defining a work over time
This is similar to the scene I see when you see the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks" that was shut at the bar at evening, and in the window that resembles an aquarium, from the same position as the characters he that are observed.
I believe that in the painting Hopper was trying to open up space to the viewer, inviting him to look at the silent tranquil, precise and serene scene given to us by the darkness.
The space, designed for an active viewer could be the keystone, which allows the painting to be changed over time and consequently to remain timeless, indestructible and even modern.
The work, created in 1942, cannot be immediately linked to a specific historical moment However, it is believed that its date can be altered depending on the changing viewer, depending on the moment at the period in which the work is viewed.
My opinion is that this is the key to reading, the time and space occupied to the reader Hopper was hoping to create.
I'll explain.
Researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able observe how many describe the film by highlighting these aspects:
"[...] the solitude, the feeling of emptyness of a world whose shimmering patina begins to give way [...] The distinctively commercial essence lies, the myths rip off their masks to reveal an unrealized reality, devoid of valid points of reference Isolated by doubt and a lack of morality. "
The night and the transformation
I believe this interpretation is a little ambiguous, that is, it's a interpretation provided by the social context as well as by the date attributed to the work: The United States between the 40s and 50s, during the economic boom which redefined the social and cultural assets in the life of people who lived in a society which is even a bit bourgeois where nightclubs are viewed as places of solitude or despair.
It's a little true, but slightly not.
First time that I came across this painting, without having studied it, it brought me happiness and peace with its bright contrast and its nighttime stillness.
Perhaps, as a resident of an extremely noisy and crowded metropolis, the night is one of the moments when I can experience the city more calmly with fewer people in the area more cars as well as less noise. There are also more space between the streets to appropriate, the best place to be, beneath the city's starless sky. Night has a completely different meaning for me from the people who drank in bars across America. United States during the 40s: when the sun goes down the city changes its appearance and the streets become more free and simple.
It is impossible to ignore the way society has evolved over the course of more than half a century of social and cultural changes, in between Pop and Rock culture, and between the popular psychedelic scene and the 2000s.
As a girl of the 90s, I have also grown up at night and by that I mean everything "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. It is for me common to be out after dark, often walking around the neighborhood, and on Saturdays looking for the best party, dancing until the early hours while riding a motorbike, or car to locate the last bar open you can grab a bread or hot pizza, where to drink the last glass and light the last cigarette before sunrise came. From the 80s and to the present, nightlife stopped from frightening those who stayed home (let's not forget the jazz movement, anti-prohibitionism and the Cursed Poets all of them perfect nights owls) and it became the place where the majority of people of the world find tranquility and security of the other nighthawks.
Hopper's modern realism
The painting of Hopper today reminds me of numerous scenes from day life. It makes me almost happy and, in all likelihood, sympathize with the last three characters who engage in with the bartender as he is cleaning the bar to end the day and then open another. People who are nocturnal seek peace in the silence of their nocturnal companions, contemplate their lives, watching their surroundings through a glass, and meet as a tribe in the night, welcoming everyone , and never judging anyone. It's no accident that in the most ancient ancestral civilizations such as the Indian one, the hour and a half before dawn is known as Brahmamuhurta or the time of Brahma, the best moment to commit oneself to prayer, meditation, study and introspection. In this time, the energies are more acute and intense, but they are of an ethereal, spiritual focus.
I see no solitude or empty space in Hopper's painting. I also found it among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters, as even the right-thinking people started drinking in the evening.
That's why even the oldest and most popular areas were transformed into showcases for the consumer as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square had to rearrange themselves in line, waiting for their turn while the sound of the drums that played on the the street was silenced by police sirens. malding meaning is a worry for me now that nighttime is degraded by its mystical, timeless ambience, by its being a moment of aggregation for individuals, and by becoming an additional uncovering tool of the system that demands the highest level of professionalism and clarity even in the darkest parts in the city.
