An annual international symposium on olive oil and health held by Yale School of Public Health. Yale School of Public Health will be heading to the middle of the world of olive oil the Mediterranean region of Spain top experts will be gathered later this year to examine the impact and potential of what is sometimes referred to as "liquid gold."

It is hosted by Jaen University. University of Jaen, the symposium will take place from December 9-12 in Jaen which is a city located in the region of Andalusia located in the middle of Spain's olive oil belt. It is also an area that is being considered as an UNESCO World Heritage site for a grove known as the Mar de Olivos, or "Sea of Olives." This is the third international symposium held in 2018. The previous year's symposium was delayed because of the epidemic.

The event was organized with Vasilis Vasiliou, Ph.D., the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology and chair of the Yale School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences and Tassos C. Kyriakides, Ph.D. Tassos C. Kyriakides, Ph.D., Yale Center for Analytical Sciences (biostatistics) faculty member, the symposium will bring participants from business, academia farmers, regional and national decision makers to explore the untapped opportunities of the Olive tree as well as its products particularly olive oil.

"We're thrilled to be back. This year's event will be the largest to date, with an amazing and exciting program. I am truly excited about bringing all the people who are as enthusiastic about olive oil like I am." Vasiliou said. Vasiliou. "There's nothing else like this gathering anywhere else on the planet."

This year's symposium will address various issues related to olive cultivation and the future of olive oil both in terms of human and global health. These will include:

Recent findings about health advances related to olive oil.
What is the impact of climate change on olive groves and how olive agriculture can positively affect the climate.
Effective olive oil marketing along with business strategies.
Every program session will close in a panel discussion, followed by the opportunity to ask questions. The symposium will also include the opportunity to taste olive oil and an excursion through olive groves.

The Yale School of Public Health is planning to establish The Yale Institute for Olive Sciences and Health The institute would be devoted to studying the scientific aspects of olive trees, their fruits and their derivatives, and ways to further integrate the fruit and its components into the diet of people. The institute would also focus on planetary health issues, including circular economy models, sustainability and climate change.

Vasiliou, who is from Greece as well as one of the major centers for olive oil production as well as a leading consumer, said that a proposal to establish an olive oil institution needs to be reviewed by the year's end. This institute would function as a global organization to coordinate and carry out research in all fields related to olive trees and their products.

There's nothing like this event anywhere in the world.

Vasilis Vasiliou
"I was raised with olive oil and have seen its benefits firsthand. Mediterranean nutrition has been recognized for a long time as the most healthiest in the world, and its cornerstone is olive oil," said the doctor. "I want to help establish the Yale School of Public Health's collaboration leadership in this important subject."

And, Kyriakides, an olive oil sommelier, not only continuously tastes oils from all over the world, he takes in large quantities of olive oil each day in his cooking as well as his breakfast extra virgin olive oil shot.

"It is a good choice for me and is delicious and healthfully nutritious," he said. "The Olive oil and the olive tree have connected people for thousands of years; it is our responsibility as public health professionals to ensure the benefits that this superfood has on the human body are shared with those who we work with."

The research of the past 50 years strongly suggests that olive oil is beneficial to healthy health, Kyriakides said. A daily consumption that is 20g of olive oil (about two tablespoons) that includes a certain amount of a certain polyphenol (at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives) is a health claim that has been approved by the European Food Safety Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, that relates to the protection of blood fats from the effects of oxidative stress.

Spain has asked to host the co-host of the symposium this year, is the largest producers of olive oil in the world, accounting for 35 to 40% of its oil production Kyriakides said. Furthermore, many of the innovations in the field of olive farming and sustainability and environmental health initiatives, have come from Spanish practices.

"Now more than ever before, the need for an internationally focused institute is so apparent in our efforts to create more sustainable practices that will help both the planet and human well-being," Kyriakides said.

Some of them have strong biological impacts.

3. Olive Oil Has Strong Anti-Inflammatory properties
Chronic inflammation is believed to be a major cause of diseases, such as heart disease, cancer metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes Alzheimer's, arthritis and even obesity.

Extra-virgin olive oils can help reduce inflammation, which may be one of the major reasons for its health benefits.

The main anti-inflammatory effects are mediated through antioxidants. One of the most significant antioxidants is oleocanthal which has been proven to work like ibuprofen which is an anti-inflammatory drug ( 10Trusted Source).

Some scientists estimate that the oleocanthal contained in 3.4 tablespoons (50 milliliters) in extra virgin olive oil has similar effects to 10 percent of the adult dosage of Ibuprofen ( 11Trusted Source).

Research also suggests that oleic acid, the principal fatty acid present of olive oil may lower levels of important inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive proteins (CRP) ( 2Trusted Source, 3Trusted Source).

One study also showed that antioxidants from olive oil can inhibit some genes and proteins that cause inflammation ( 12Trusted Source).

Interestingly, it has also been proven to reduce blood pressure, which is one of the strongest risk factors for cardiovascular disease as well as premature deaths. One study found that olive oil reduced the requirement for blood pressure medication by 48% ( 26Trusted Source, 27Trusted Source, 28Trusted Source).
