How to Create a Green Wall With Succulents
Over the years, our nursery continues to be associated with many interesting projects that benefit from the diverse characteristics of succulents. One in the most intriguing was the preparation of some green walls for the flower show in San Francisco. The designer wanted some large panels with geometric shapes, along with a smaller "picture" to hang with them. When it was completed, we felt this project was highly successful, therefore we wished to share our process for creating green walls.
The first challenge ended up being increase the risk for support structure that would keep the plants available, and enable because of their care. We settled on a plywood back, using a wood edge, then horizontal metal flashing for "shelves" every 12 inches to offer the soil. The shelves were attached to the plywood backing with short screws. Drip tubes were placed across the bottom of each and every shelf while the panel was placed upright, the tubes can be along the top of every "layer of soil. With proper emitter spacing, each soil "shelf" could be watered along its entire width.
All in the layers were stuffed with potting soil. You should use as finely textured potting soil as possible find, since drainage will be really good as a result of effective 12" depth with the soil (the length involving the "shelves".) A layer of forest moss was placed on top of the potting soil and after that one inch chicken wire was placed through the whole panel retained by attaching the edges on the plywood edge. You will also have to wire the chicken wire either for the shelves or on the plywood panel wires to keep your "face" from bulging out when the panel is placed upright.
The panels were planted with the chicken wire and moss in the pattern specified by the designer. Succulents provide a good various leaf shapes and color which you can use to generate a broad range of textures and design. Be sure to consider the final size in the plants when you develop your design.
After planting, panels were grown in a very horizontal position prior to the succulents were well established. When completed, these panels were some in the most stunning items we have ever had here. And read this article represent just a few with the unlimited possibilities for green wall panels. With a little effort and imagination, you can do something similar to your garden, deck or patio.
