North Raleigh's days-long search for a venomous zebra cobra ends with a glue trap.

As a result of hours of consultation between law enforcement and animal control officers, a venomous zebra cobra was captured on Wednesday night by a glue trap, ending an eventful 48-hour period that attracted attention throughout North Carolina.

We guided the cobra into a red bucket and took it to a safe location so that we could fully remove the glue from its body.

An earlier video interview had captured a striped snake crawling onto a porch on Sandringham Drive from the siding of a house. Its hood was visible when it raised its head to look around.

When Animal Control officers confirmed the snake was the one they moved camera crews back before they attempted to catch it.

Early Tuesday, a 911 call from that home sparked the search.

Raleigh is a North Carolina city. Following hours of consultation and preparation by Raleigh police and animal control officers, a glue trap ultimately trapped a venomous zebra cobra on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday night, capping an event that garnered attention throughout the state.

A red bucket was used to guide the cobra into a safe location so that the glue could be removed from its body completely.

The snake was seen crawling onto a porch of a house on Sandringham Drive earlier in the day. A hood was visible wherever it turned its head.

When Animal Control officers confirmed the snake was the one they moved camera crews back before they attempted to catch it.

The search was sparked by a 911 call from the same home early Tuesday.

Joan Nelson said she was relieved the ordeal was over.

I feel much safer and I am really happy, she said. It feels good to be outside now, even walking on my deck. However, I feel bad for the snake.

The snake, a zebra cobra, is extremely fast and can spit up to nine feet away, making a walk with the dog even scarier. Apparently, African Snakebite Institute believes the snake is very dangerous. It is possible that the venom can damage a victim's nervous system.

One who is poisoned by the cobra would immediately feel pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. In addition to a heavy fever and breathing problems, respiratory failure could also result.

An experienced veterinarian, Dr. Salina Locke, treats all kinds of pets at the Avian and Exotic Animal Care.

There is no evidence that this species of cobra bites. Venom is more likely to be sprayed by them, she said; they are very accurate and aim straight for the eyes.

Due to its dangers, Locke advises against keeping this snake as a pet.

People tend to get bitten most often when they're sleeping. Research indicates people who are bit can suffer health issues for a long time.

There was a police search of 6917 Chamonix Place Tuesday afternoon, near the street where the last sighting of the cobra was reported.

In March, there was an issue with the animals at that home. They returned on Monday and Tuesday after the zebra cobra was discovered on a porch about a half mile away.

The records of the county show Rebecca and Keith Gifford live at the address. His Facebook account shows several pictures of snakes he claims are owned by his son, Christopher, according to the account.

Christopher Gifford has over 460000 followers on TikTok. His post claims he has a zebra cobra that is 7 feet long.
